Realm of the Underworld Action Figures Identification Tool with Pictures
During the 1980s, Remco created many memorable toys that mimicked the look and feel of the extremely popular Masters of the Universe. While some fans consider these toys knock-offs, they are still fondly remembered by many others. Their toys have even become collectible on their own and as companions to other collections. This is why Zoloworld revived the feel of Remco’s toys with their Zoloverse and the Realm of the Underworld toy line.
Zoloworld entered the scene in 2008, providing both protective cases for toys and new action figures. By 2013, the company had introduced Realm of the Underworld, the line that celebrated the successes of Remco. Many of these 5 ½” to 5 ¾” toys had many similarities to Remco’s vintage The Lost World of Warlord toy line. They also shared the squat pose that defined the knock-off toys of the 1980s.
The success of the Realm of the Underworld prompted Zoloworld to create an entire Zoloverse. This included many other toy lines that looked and felt like Remco’s vintage toys. For instance, the company released new Pirates of the Galaxseas and Warrior Beasts action figures.
Most of the Realm of the Underworld action figures came on colorful blister cards. However, some of the toys, like those from the Slimed Drones subline, were released in windowed boxes. Cards invited consumers to collect all the action figures. Furthermore, the packaging also clearly stated that these toys were intended for adult collectors with parts inappropriate for children.
The back of the cards listed the various figures in the toy line as well as related Zoloworld toy lines. For instance, one of these other lines was the Legends of Darkness. In contrast, the back of the boxed figures only gave a small peak at some of the toy company’s upcoming toys.
The first wave of Realm of the Underworld action figures introduced a small handful of action figures. There were Hercules Son of Zeus, Arcomancer Evil Warlock, Archfiend Skeleton Minions, and Archfiend Ultimate Evil Edition. This wave also included an Escape from the Underworld 17×23 print created by Scott West.
Zoloworld’s second wave brought in even more characters to the toy line. There was Kry-Sis (Underworld Warrior), Preytus Wraith of Acheron, Archterrus (Artifact Stealer), and Arcomancer (Overworld Edition). The second wave also included a Battle Accessory Pack that came on a retro-style blister card. This accessory pack included a glow-in-the-dark war hammer and a glow-in-the-dark pickaxe. Meanwhile, it contained interchangeable arms and legs for Arcomancer Ultimate Darkness. This set also included a fur-like pelt and leg covers, a vinyl cape, and an exclusive mini-comic.
Even more action figures were introduced for wave 3. Zoloworld bought out Cyclops (Warrior Beast), Grym – The Executioner (Stygian Barbarian), and Jewel Smuggler, who had both a blue and a yellow variant. Then, there were Arcomancer Dark Warlock, Zargan, Ulysseus (Mystical Bow Hunter), and Kry-Sis the Warrior. The company also introduced a set of 5 action figures including Kry-Sis (The Warrior), Ulysseus (Mystical Bowhunter), Grym the Executioner (Stygian Barbarian), Cyclops (Warrior Beast), and The Jewel Smuggler (Catalog Edition).
Otherwise, Zoloworld produced a few different NYCC-exclusive action figures that came out during the third wave. First, there was an NYCC variant of Archfiend Warrior. This toy featured a ZWorld Interchangeable Body. There were several translucent body parts including the head, sword, and belt. Then, it came with a shield accessory, Neal Adams Artwork Backer Card, Faccone Artwork Backer, and a randomly packed mini-comic.
The next NYCC exclusive that came out during wave 3 was Arcomancer (Harbinger of Havoc). This figure also featured the Zworld interchangeable body and a removable head. Moreover, it came with a long axe, removable armor, a removable helmet, Neal Adams Artwork Backer Card, Faccone Artwork Card Back, and a randomly packed mini-comic.
The final NYCC exclusive from wave 3 was Vulcan Warrior Beast. Like the other toys from the line, it featured the Zworld interchangeable beast body and an interchangeable head. It also came with a spiked club accessory and removable fur.
The fourth wave of Realm of the Underworld action figures introduced Amon Dark, Snow Wolf Warrior, Ice Demon of the North, Nerkus (Stygian Barbarian), and Slayer (Dark Defender). This wave also brought out a new set of five figures. This set included Slayer (Dark Defender), Nerkus (Stygian Barbarian), Amon Dark, Ice Demon of the North, and Snow Wolf Warrior.
Beyond these waves, the Realm of the Underworld toy line featured a sub-line called the Slimed Drones. There were several action figures released under this banner. It included Arcomander (Lord of Chaos), Amon Dark (Evil Demon), Aquamancer, Archfiend Warrior (Tattered One), Corpse Tooth, Fugaziles (Indistinguishable Copy). There were also Molten Meltdown Arcomancer Slimed Drones, Hercules (Fallen to Darkness), Onyx Sinder, Prince Algor, and Ramyr (Holiday Exclusive).
Over the years, Zoloworld has introduced even more action figures than the ones listed above. For instance, they created Hercules Underworld Escape, Wraith Bringer, Cyclops Battle Beast, and Snake Warrior around 2017. Then, there was Slayer (Frozen in Time), Nekrus Stygian Barbarian, and Amon Dark from around 2022. The company even created a 16” Giant Cyclops action figure. There have even been special limited-edition 10th-anniversary toys released over the years.
Some Realm of the Underworld toys even featured a small story about the line. This story could be found on the backs of boxes like those for the Slimed Drones. According to the story, “the atmosphere within the Underworld animates the dead and changes mortals into mindless drones. Outside of this land lies The Stygian Swamps that contain an evil so powerful; that it consumes and drives a mind into insanity. You have the power to determine the fate of each of these warriors! Will you free them of their mental imprisonment or will you let them fall into darkness? It is in your hands!”
