The First Godzilla Action Figure by Marusan

Marusan, a Japanese company, first introduced Godzilla to the toy market in 1966. They started production on a line of tin toy Godzilla versions, standing approximately 10 inches tall. This mechanical walking Godzilla was a huge success and quickly became one of the most sought-after toys of the time.

After the tin toy, Marusan began producing vinyl toys, creating a 9-inch Godzilla figure in 1966. This Godzilla figure began the iconic “Kaiju” series, opening the floodgates for various iterations of Godzilla and other monster figures.

Other Manufacturers

Through the years, many companies have produced action figures based on Godzilla. Some companies include Bandai, Mattel, Funko, Medicom, Neca, Playmates, Imperial, and Jakks Pacific. 1978 saw the Godzilla toy line distributed by Mattel and manufactured under Bandai. The line was Godzilla’s Gang. It consisted of Godzilla, King Joe, Bemustar, Noko-Girin, Miclas, Eleking, Ikarusu Planeter, and Muruchi.

In conclusion, Godzilla’s first foray into the world of action figures began in the mid-1960s, thanks to Marusan. Its legacy has endured the test of time, making Godzilla one of the most enduring symbols in the worlds of film and toys alike. Bio: I am the founder and owner of Wheeljack’s Lab pop Culture and Toy Shop. My vision has always been to reunite customers with their favorite childhood toys and pop culture, triggering fond memories, and reigniting their imaginations. Every day, I work in the “lab” where it’s Christmas 365 days a year. I scour the internet, like when we had the Sears Catalog of yesteryear, for the next great treasure. Then, I await the arrival of the postman as if he were Santa Claus himself and helping collectors worldwide with their versions of Christmas. Every day as a vintage toy buyer is an absolute joy!
