Gargoyles: Disney’s Darkest Cartoon

The Gargoyles we know and love today began as an animated series. The show had a dark aesthetic, following the darker stylistic choices of Fox Kids’ Batman: The Animated Series. Disney also realized that older audiences were a potentially untapped market. Gargoyles first aired on October 24, 1994. The series became a quick success, drawing in fans of all ages. The show ended up airing 78 episodes over three seasons. The show’s success inspired the creation of a toy line based on the beloved show. Kenner signed on to create the Gargoyles toy line.

The First Gargoyles Action Figures

The first wave of Kenner Gargoyles toys appeared on store shelves in 1995. They produced 6” action figures until 1996. Kenner added multiple sublines and characters in the featured line-ups. Most of the characters, including the humans, sported a pair of wings – staying true to the Gargoyles brand.

Kenner’s first wave of Gargoyles action figures consisted of the six primary characters from the series: Goliath, Hudson, Broadway, Brooklyn, Lexington, and Demona. Each figure stood approximately six inches tall and featured an assortment of weapons and accessories, along with a unique “action feature” that embodied the character’s abilities in the series.

Kenner later produced series 2 in 1996, and they introduced new characters. Such characters included Stone Camo Broadway, Stone Camo Lexington, and Xanatos. They also made three Deluxe Battle Action figures. Kenner also produced a playset, some vehicles, and a massive Ultimate Goliath action figure.

Gargoyles Legacy

The Gargoyles action figures’ arrival in 1995 significantly impacted the world of toy collectibles. Even though the toy line tapered off before the show concluded in 1997, fans still fondly remember the brand. Their high-quality design, combined with the popularity of the television series, ensured their success and enduring legacy. Even today, these figures are highly sought after by collectors, reflecting the nostalgic sentiment associated with the iconic series. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or new to the world of vintage toys, you’ll find that uncovering the origins of items like the Gargoyles action figures can add a new layer of appreciation to your collection.

Bio: I am the founder and owner of Wheeljack’s Lab pop Culture and Toy Shop. My vision has always been to reunite customers with their favorite childhood toys and pop culture, triggering fond memories, and reigniting their imaginations. Every day, I work in the “lab” where it’s Christmas 365 days a year. I scour the internet, like when we had the Sears Catalog of yesteryear, for the next great treasure. Then, I await the arrival of the postman as if he were Santa Claus himself and helping collectors worldwide with their versions of Christmas. Every day as a vintage toy buyer is an absolute joy!
