1997 Hasbro Boys & Girls Toy Fair Catalog – G.I. Joe Classic Collection

Explore the pages of the rare 1997 Hasbro Boys & Girls Toy Fair Catalog with our high-definition scans. This catalog featured sneak peeks of multiple Hasbro toy lines, like Beast Wars Transformers, and Star Wars. It also featured G.I. Joe Classic Collection and Batman toys.

The 1997 Hasbro Boys & Girls Toy Fair Catalog promoted a return of an iconic style with the G.I. Joe Classic Collection action figures. Even though A Real American Hero reinvented the toys, scaling them down and giving them a new story, Hasbro felt that it was time to bring back the larger toys from the past. Thus, they featured military-themed, clothed action figures that harkened back to the original toy line.

This 1997 Hasbro Boys & Girls Toy Fair Catalog page first presented information on #80955, the Modern Forces Assortment, and #81455, the Modern Forces Assortment – Ethnic. These assortments contained two new 12-inch collector figures, representing recruits from two elite segments of the U.S. armed forces. The Navy Blue Angel featured the performance team’s signature uniform and all authentic flight accessories. Meanwhile, the U.S. Marine Force Recon had authentic-looking weaponry and communications equipment. Hasbro planned to release the two new figures in the fall.

Then, there was #81160, the Armed Forces Service Assortment, and #81180, the Armed Forces Service Assortment – Ethnic. These assortments had realistic uniforms and gear highlighting the fully articulated 12-inch figures. Buyers could choose either the U.S. Navy Serviceman, USMC Best Camo, USAF Crew Chief, or the U.S. National Guardsman. These figures were great for kids and collectors of all ages. These all represented the first 4 action figures that appeared in 1998.

Next, Hasbro promoted #27851, the G.I. Joe Mission Gear Assortment. This authentic accessory set added even more realism to 12” figures. It included 2 new themes: the Recon Base Camp gear and Navy Seal gear. There were also the three original gear assortments.

Finally, there was #81430, the World War II Forces Assortment. There were authentic-looking uniforms modeled after the B-17 Bomber crewmen who flew the military to new altitudes. Meanwhile, the PT-109 officer boasted realistic equipment such as a flare gun and a lifejacket.

About Our Hasbro Toy Fair Catalog Scans

To promote their upcoming slate of products, Hasbro handed out catalogs to attendees of toy fairs and other events. Each catalog was filled with information about their newest toys, even ones still in development. Thus, they often provided the first looks at action figures, playsets, vehicles, and more from their lines. Therefore, they have become valuable and rare collector’s items.

These Hasbro Toy Fair Catalogs featured toys from their beloved lines. For instance, the company was responsible for one of the most popular action figures of all time: G.I. Joe. They also partnered with Takara to bring the Transformers to the Western market. The company also dipped into the fantastical worlds of Air Raiders, Inhumanoids, and Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light. After Hasbro acquired Kenner, they also became the home of toy lines like Jurassic Park and Star Wars.

Hasbro used in-production prototypes in their images, as these catalogs were prepared before the lines were released. This meant that the featured toys often differed from the retail releases. Moreover, toys sometimes appeared only on these catalog pages, as they were canceled or never hit retail store shelves.

While Hasbro only handed these booklets out to trade professionals, we have now made them available to all. You can explore the toys featured in these catalogs with our Hasbro Toy Fair Catalog Scans. This is a rare treat since catalogs like these have become increasingly difficult to locate with each passing year.
