1996 Hasbro Pre-Toy Fair Catalog – G.I. Joe Extreme

Explore the pages of the rare 1996 Hasbro Pre-Toy Fair Catalog with our high-definition scans. Before attending any Toy Fairs for the year, Hasbro handed out this catalog to advertise their upcoming toys. This catalog contained sneak peeks at lines like Gargoyles, G.I. Joe Extreme, and Beast Wars Transformers.

The 1996 Hasbro Pre-Toy Fair Catalog advertised yet another one of the company’s premier action figure lines, G.I. Joe Extreme. G.I. Joe has been one of Hasbro’s best-selling toy lines since the 1960s. While it disappeared for a short time at the end of the 1970s, it made a triumphant return in the 1980s. As A Real American Hero’s popularity waned, Hasbro once again rebranded the line as G.I. Joe Extreme since everything in the 1990s was extreme.

Joe team battled the evil forces of SKAR: Soldiers of Kaos, Anarchy & Ruin. Each 5” tall action figure had its own special feature.

Next, Hasbro promoted #81223, the Road Bullet Cycle. The G.I. JOE team raced into the action on the fastest cycle ever built. Ultra SLAM Firepower allowed kids to fire a foam missile at enemy targets. It also had a lift-up canopy that allowed G.I. JOE figures to fit inside.

Finally, there was #81235, the G.I. Joe Heavy Artillery Assortment, which brought on heavy artillery. Free-standing G.I. JOE Detonator with exclusive Sgt. Savage figure pivoted and tilted on its base to hone in on any target. Then, players could pull the activation trigger to make the figure slam the firing button and launch the huge foam mega missile. SKAR Spitfire, with an exclusive Inferno figure, blasted a giant foam mega missile into an unsuspecting troop. These incoming missiles hit their target and caused massive battle damage, toppling platforms and figures.

About Our Hasbro Toy Fair Catalog Scans

To promote their upcoming slate of products, Hasbro handed out catalogs to attendees of toy fairs and other events. Each catalog was filled with information about their newest toys, even ones still in development. Thus, they often provided the first looks at action figures, playsets, vehicles, and more from their lines. Therefore, they have become valuable and rare collector’s items.

These Hasbro Toy Fair Catalogs featured toys from their beloved lines. For instance, the company was responsible for one of the most popular action figures of all time: G.I. Joe. They also partnered with Takara to bring the Transformers to the Western market. The company also dipped into the fantastical worlds of Air Raiders, Inhumanoids, and Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light. After Hasbro acquired Kenner, they also became the home of toy lines like Jurassic Park and Star Wars.

Hasbro used in-production prototypes in their images, as these catalogs were prepared before the lines were released. This meant that the featured toys often differed from the retail releases. Moreover, toys sometimes appeared only on these catalog pages, as they were canceled or never hit retail store shelves.

While Hasbro only handed these booklets out to trade professionals, we have now made them available to all. You can explore the toys featured in these catalogs with our Hasbro Toy Fair Catalog Scans. This is a rare treat since catalogs like these have become increasingly difficult to locate with each passing year.
