When Were the Original Star Trek Action Figures Made?

A voyage into the history of Star Trek action figures transports us back to when the renowned toy manufacturer, Mego, began pioneering work on the original Star Trek action figures. These toys came about almost a decade after Star Trek: The Original Series began on NBC in 1966, quickly accumulating a passionate fanbase throughout three seasons.

The Original Star Trek Action Figures

In 1974, Mego took up the challenge of recreating this beloved universe as action figures. The very first series consisted of the memorable Capt. Kirk, Mr. Spock, Dr. McCoy (“Bones”), Mr. Scott (“Scottie”), and a member of the antagonistic Klingon race. Each of these figures was 8 inches tall and fully poseable.

Barely a year later, Mego introduced Series 2 in 1975. Fans were delighted with the addition of Lt. Uhara to the lineup, joining the original characters from Series 1. The second series also ventured further into the exotic, introducing a colorful cast of alien characters: a Neptunian, the Keeper, a Gorn, and a Cheron. Mego released these characters under the name “Alien.”

Not resting on their achievements, Mego continued their journey into the Star Trek universe with Series 3 in 1976. This third venture included Andorian, Mugatu, Romulan, and Talos, making the play experience even more diverse.

Star Trek Accessories and Playsets

Yet, Mego understood that the Star Trek experience wasn’t solely about the characters but their intriguing environments and technologies. With this in mind, the company designed accessories that allowed fans to reenact their favorite missions. The Mission to Gamma VI playset was one example, alongside the Transporter Room, a Palitoy UK exclusive. To top it off, Mego released the USS Enterprise Action Playset, a delight for fans eager to captain their own starship.
