First aired in 1983, the Inspector Gadget animated series quickly gained popularity for its unique blend of humor, action, and gadget-laden hijinks. The show follows Inspector Gadget, a cyborg police inspector working for a secret police organization that fights crime worldwide. Each mission focuses on stopping the criminal group “M.A.D.” (Mean And Dirty). Dr. Claw leads M.A.D. The show had two seasons and a total of 86 episodes running from 1983 to 1986. The cartoon’s success soon led to an array of merchandise, including clothing, books, and of course, toys.

The First Inspector Gadget Action Figures

Galoob produced the first Inspector Gadget action figures in 1983. Designed with attention to detail, these action figures showcased Inspector Gadget’s iconic trench coat look and the many gadgets that made the character a household name. Galoob produced several action figures for Inspector Gadget during the mid-80s. These included the basic action figures, wind-up toys that recreated Gadget’s exceptional abilities, and even a complex 12-inch action figure with 14 different gadgets that children could operate manually. Other toy manufacturers created toy lines based on the cartoon. For example, in 1992, Tiger Toys released an Inspector Gadget toy line consisting of many of the cartoon’s popular characters and gadgets.
