The Ten Most Expensive Centurions Toys

Kenner introduced many new and imaginative toys in the latter half of the 1980s, including the Centurions. Presenting a world where men could fuse with machines to gain power, the Centurions had a memorable series of action figures along with power suit accessories. Unlike most toy lines, the vehicles combined with the action figures as power suits. When the Centurions combined with their machines, they gained PowerXtreme.

Like most toy lines from the 1980s, Kenner made sure that there would be an animated series to help advertise their new heroes to the public. With Nippon Sunrise Studio 7 creating the animation, Ruby-Spears Enterprises introduced the new series on April 7, 1986.  Even though the series had two seasons with 65 episodes in total, Centurions ended its run on December 12, 1986. During this time, viewers had the chance to watch the Centurions undermine the evil ambitions of Dr. Terror and his companion, Hacker.

Likewise, Kenner’s new toy line only had a short time in the limelight. Despite the company’s high hopes, they only introduced seven different characters in the first and only wave. These seven action figures were accompanied by 10 different assault weapon accessories.

Presenting the Ten Most Expensive Centurions Toys from Online Auctions

With the short run of both the toy line and the cartoon series, the Centurions have become one of the most collectible toy lines from the 1980s. With only a few action figures released to store shelve, even fewer have survived to the current day in mint condition. So, these toys often command high prices, especially when sealed toys become available.

10. Kenner Centurions PowerXtreme Hacker Dr. Terror’s Henchman

Kenner Centurions PowerXtreme Hacker Dr. Terror's Henchman Half-Man and Half-Cyborg

Helping the nefarious Dr. Terror fulfill his evil plots, Hacker faithfully stood by his side. This man was a half-human, half-computer monstrosity. Once an average criminal, Hacker decided to let Dr. Terror experiment on him in exchange for power. Thus, he was combined with the super-computer, Lesion, and was programmed to destroy the Centurions.

This vile henchman had a few different weapons at his disposal. His cyborg side, Lesion, had a spiked mace. He also had a finely honed axe blade that could whip forward and spin. So, he could devastate any foe that stood in his way. Hacker could gain even more power when he combined with the Doom Drones Strafer. Otherwise, he could combine with Dr. Terror’s cyborg half, Syntax, to form the ultimate evil.

One of these action figures sold on eBay for $499.98 on January 06, 2023.

9. Kenner Centurions PowerXtreme Orbital Interceptor

Kenner Centurions PowerXtreme Orbital Interceptor

The Centurions had many weapons systems that they call upon to help them take down Dr. Terror and his evil forces. One of these Assault Weapons Systems was the Orbital Interceptor. This exo-frame was designed to be worn by the daring Ace McCloud.

This piece of advanced weaponry was providing essential protection when the Centurions undertook missions in outer-atmospheric conditions. While this exo-suit was designed for space, the cartoon series featured it in multiple underwater scenes as well. It also had specialized surveillance capabilities that helped them keep an eye on Dr. Terror and his goons. It had three different battle modes: “Cruise”, “Pursuit” and “Power Blast”.

To help the Centurions complete their missions, it had several useful features. This exo-suit came equipped with a life support helmet, 2 inner-atmospheric thrusters, and a front assault pak module with outer-atmospheric thrusters. It also had 2 particle beam deflectors, a radar honing device, a back assault pak module/glider, and a particle beam mission. Thus, there was plenty of firepower and tools at their disposal.

8. HG Toys Centurions PowerXtreme Max Ray Electronic Voice Helmet

HG Toys Centurions PowerXtreme Max Ray Electronic Voice Helmet

Kenner was not the only company that created toys for the Centurions. Even though they concentrated on creating quality action figures and accessories, other companies had the chance to create licensed products.

One of the companies that acquired the license to create Centurions merchandise was HG Toys. This Hong Kong-based company was best known for creating simple licensed toys and activities for television and movie properties. They would range from puzzles to novelty banks.

As for the Centurions, HG Toys created a range of products, including bank busts for some of the main characters. They also created role-play products like the Twin Laser Cannon that came with a utility belt and badge.  One of their most notable products was a Max Ray voice-changing electronic helmet.

Once a child put this helmet on their head, they could activate the voice-changing module to feel like one of the Centurions. The battery-operated device could either change the tone of their voice or amplify it. Both the battery and the switch were located on the left side of the helmet.

One of these toys sold on eBay for $530.00 on September 27, 2020.

7. Kenner Centurions PowerXtreme Doom Drone Traumatizer

Kenner Centurions PowerXtreme Doom Drone Traumatizer

The Centurions were not the only ones that could combine with exo-frames to gain immense powers. Dr. Terror and his troops called upon the Doom Drone troops. This exo-suit was a great choice to combine with both Hacker and his cyborg half, Lesion.

The Traumatizer was a deadly cyborg-drones system specializing in ground-level destruction. The Traumatizer assisted the evil Dr. Terror in his never-ending mission to defeat the heroic Centurions. Terrorizer was equipped with a pivoting and firing thoraxial missile, 2 magma-laser cannons, and movable robotic arms and legs. Traumatizer could be combined with Dr. Terror and Hacker for mega-evil power. Otherwise, it could attach to either Syntax or Lesion, Dr. Terror and Hacker’s scheming computer halves.

The Traumatizer had a small but powerful array of weapons. The magna-lasers were mounted on both the right arm and right leg. Meanwhile, there was a thoraxial missile that could pivot upwards. To launch this missile, players turned the unit’s head. Finally, it featured movable arm and leg joints.

6. Kenner Centurions PowerXtreme John Thunder Prototype

Kenner Centurions John Thunder Prototype

There were several Centurions toys that Kenner developed and prototyped yet never made it to the market. One of these toys was of one of the Centurions’ allies, the native American John Thunder.

John Thunder was a covert operations specialist that helped the team prepare for their missions. With his espionage skills, he could silently slip into enemy lines to spy on them. He had a few different weapons that he relied on. First, there was his vibro-knife, which came out in self-defense situations. He also had a pair of electromagnetic gloves that allowed him to easily climb metal surfaces, walls, and ceilings.

Aside from the action figure, Kenner had prepared prototypes of two accessories that would have complimented John Thunder. There was both the Silent Arrow and the Thunder Knife.

One of these rare prototypes popped up on eBay over a decade ago. It sold for $799.99 on November 17, 2011.

5. Kenner Centurions PowerXtreme Ace McCloud

Kenner Centurions PowerXtreme Ace McCloud Air Operations Expert and Skyknight Assault Weapons System

In the only wave of Centurions toys, there were only three members of the team available. One of these toys was for the incomparable Ace McCloud.

As the team’s Air Operations Expert, Ace specialized in fighting off aerial foes and dangers. With his skills, he took to the skies and even exited the atmosphere to fly through space. As a daredevil, he loved to take on the most dangerous missions available. As a child, he won the amateur flyers club award for developing a remote control airplane that responded to brain transmissions. Moreover, Ace was the only person to ever fly a glider off Mt. Everest. This feat was even more impressive since he did it upside-down.

His primary exo-frame, the Skyknight helped him fly through the air. The Skyknight featured a helmet, two turbo thrusters, dual laser sensors, and stinsel missiles. It also had a back assault pak module with directional jet props, a laser cannon pod, and a laser bomb.

One of these toys sold on eBay for $1,000.00 on April 20, 2016.

4. Kenner Centurions PowerXtreme Depth Charger (1986)

Kenner Centurions PowerXtreme Depth Charger Sea Assault Weapon System

Each Centurion had an Assaults Weapons System that was designed to complement their skillset. For the sea-loving Max Ray, there was the Depth Charger, a fully-submersible underwater vehicle. With this exo-suit, Max had even more firepower at his disposal when he took on underwater missions.

The Depth Charger was the ultimate in counter-hydro technology. PowerXtreme Depth charger was a high-powered torpedo-carrying mini-sub for deep-sea missions. It came equipped with 2 pivoting pontoon thrusters, 2 rotating aqua cannons, 2 directional aquafins, 2 auxiliary aquathrusters, a firing hydromine, and 2 firing deep sea torpedos. Depth Charger’s battle modes included “Surface Dive”, “Sneak Attack”, and “Deep Sea Research”. Depth Charger could fit on all Centurions figures. Otherwise, players could combine the Depth Charger with other assault weapon systems for additional firepower.

One of these toys sold on eBay for $1,000.00 on November 27, 2013. Unlike most other toys on this list, this toy was in a mailer box, which came directly from the factory.

3. Kenner Centurions PowerXtreme Max Ray

Kenner Centurions PowerXtreme Max Ray Sea Operations Expert and Cruiser Assault Weapons System

Another member of the Centurions was the sea-loving Max Ray. While the other two members who were released in the first wave focussed on the land and the skies, Max was ready to dive into the waters.

Unrivaled in his skills in the water, Max is a member of the most formidable fighting force, the Centurions. Level-headed and a good strategist, Max planned a well-coordinated attack as a college student at age 14. Max built his own nuclear-powered submarine. He is the only person ever to waterski across the Atlantic for exercise. Likewise, Max regularly swam from California to Hawaii and back.

His assault weapons system, Cruiser, featured a helmet, a power backpack, a repulsor cannon, a hydro missile, a missile launcher, twin hydro thrusters, a keelfin, and a radar repulsor. The Cruiser was compact but powerful for rapid deployment. Its sleek and especially lightweight design made it Max Ray’s most effective Assault Weapons System out of the water as well. Since it wasn’t overly bulky, it didn’t hamper his movements on land.

A loose version of this toy was sold on eBay for $1,000.00 on April 20, 2016.

2. Kenner Centurions PowereXtreme Sea Bat

Kenner Centurions PowerXtreme Sea Bat Sea Assault Weapon System

While the Centurions did not have a full second wave of releases, a few toys managed to come out in the second year of the line’s run. One of these toys was the Assault Weapons System, Sea Bat. As one of the few toys that appeared shortly before the toys were canceled, the Sea Bat is one of the rarest toys from the line.

The Sea Bat was a fighting hydrofoil that provided speed and agility for over-water pursuit. The PowerXtreme Sea Bat came equipped with a bat-wing back unit with rotating hydro-turbines. A hydro-foil chest unit with a pulsating oxygen unit, 6 barracuda missiles, depth connections, deep sea scope, depth charger, and a heat-seeking harpoon. The Seat Bat could fit on all Centurions figures. Players could also combine the Sea Bat with other Centurions Assault Weapons Systems for additional firepower.

These toys are often missing accessories when sold loose, especially since there are not enough plugs to store all accessories on the vehicle.

One of these toys sold on eBay for $1,025.00 on June 26, 2014.

1. Kenner Centurions PowerXtreme Swingshot (1986)

Kenner Centurions Swingshot Land Assault Weapon System

Designed for Jake Rockwell, the Swingshot was one of the most powerful Exo-Frames for land-based combat. Like the Sea Bat, this was one of the few toys that came out in the second year of the Centurions’ run. Since the toy line was canceled shortly after, there are only a few pieces available to collect.

The Swingshot was an overground all-terrain fighting machine. It was equipped with working rototreads, 360⁰ rotational treadmill arms, two armored mega-blaster, a rotating chest-mounted howitzer, a rotating infrascope, and two sets of trajectoid missiles. In any mode, Jake Rockwell or any of the Centurions hero figures could plan a sneak attack against Dr. Terror. When the Centurions Power Pack was snapped into place and activated, the center and vertical shafts rotated automatically.

Like the other Assault Weapons Systems, this one could also be combined with the other units to gain additional firepower.

One of these toys sold on eBay for $3,650.00 on February 17, 2021.
