Matchbox began as a brand from the Lesney Products die-casting company back in 1953. Back then, the company gained attention from a miniature model of green and red road roller that could fit inside a matchbox. Since the toy was designed to fit into that small container, they named the brand after that. Over the years of making miniature cars, Matchbox outlived its parent company to become a part of Universal Toys then later Mattel. Over the years, they also created other toy lines like Robotech and Voltron.
