First introduced in 1986, Coleco made a popular Rambo toy line, which featured the hit character played by Sylvester Stalone. While the hit movie quickly made a fortune, it was an R-rated film. Thus, Coleco based these toys on the cartoon series that also appeared in 1986. Characters from the cartoon’s two factions, the Force of Freedom and S.A.V.A.G.E., filled up the toy line’s roster.

Page 29 of the 1987 Coleco Toy Fair Catalog presented 0828, the S.A.V.A.G.E. Strike Headquarters Stronghold and Defense compound. This playset had an observation tower with a trap door, hinged cage door, and a pivoting crane. Its weaponry included ammo cases with 3 M60 and 6 AK-47 riffles, a 7.62 mm SGM machine gun, a 5.56 mm light machine gun, a 30 mm AGS-17 grenade launcher, and a 25 mm Maniac minigun. Furthermore, it included a working winch, binoculars, communications equipment, and an official I.D. card.
Next, they promoted 0824, the S.A.V.A.G.E. Strike Cycle, a road-hugging attack vehicle. This vehicle had a concealed Maniac minigun and MAC-10 submachine guns. It also featured a heads-up display that folded down and standing room for a second passenger. The Strike Cycle included 6 Belgian grenades, rubber-like tires, and an official I.D. card.
Finally, they advertised 0843, the S.A.V.A.G.E. Strombomber. This vehicle featured a one-man, aerial bomb platform with a lever-activated propeller for ground-splitting bombardment. Moreover, it had twin machine guns that elevated and rotated 90⁰ to the side. The Stormbomber included 2 reloadable cap bombs, 8 caps, and an info card. It was approximately 6 ¾” long and 6 ⅜” high.

To promote their upcoming slate of products, Coleco handed out catalogs to toy fair and other event attendees like dealers and retailers. Each catalog was filled with information about their newest toys, even ones still in development. Thus, they were often provided the first looks at action figures, playsets, vehicles, and more from their lines. Thus, they have become valuable and rare collector’s items.
These Coleco Toy Fair Catalogs featured toys from their beloved lines. For instance, the Sectaurs, who combined insects with superheroes, appeared in multiple catalogs. Likewise, Coleco produced and promoted the Rambo toy line, which focused on the cartoon series. There were also many vehicles and toys from the Starcom toy line.
Coleco used in-production prototypes in their images as these catalogs were prepared before the lines were released. This meant that the featured toys often differed from the retail releases.
