His popularity only rose as he gained a television series in the 1950s and late 1970s. He also made a cinematic appearance in 1980. Thus, when he received a cartoon series, the Defenders of the Earth, Galoob introduced this exciting toy line.

This page of the 1986 Galoob Toy Fair Catalog presented the multiple Defenders of the Earth 5” action figures in assortment #5100. Flash Gordon™, the Phantom™, Ming the Merciless™, Lothar™, Mandrake the Magician™, and Garax™ were all macho-sculpted 5″ tall figures as seen on the DEFENDERS of the EARTH™ televised cartoon show.
Each featured DIE-CAST POWER PUNCH™. This meant that both fists and forearms were die-cast metal with fully articulated elbows and shoulders. This feature gave dramatic punching power and total kid control.
Each figure included appropriate weapons, just like the cartoon characters. Each was then sold with a mini-comic book to help inspire hours of fantasy fun.

To promote their upcoming slate of products, Galoob handed out catalogs to attendees of toy fairs and other events. Each catalog was filled with information about their newest toys, even ones still in development. Thus, they often provided the first looks at action figures, playsets, vehicles, and more from their lines. Thus, they have become valuable and rare collector’s items.
These Galoob Toy Fair Catalogs featured toys from their beloved lines. For instance, the company took players to fantasy worlds with lines like the Infaceables and Blackstar. Then, the Defenders of the Earth featured Flash Gordon and other heroes ready to save the day. Other players could create adventures in space with the Adventures of Galaxy Rangers and Star Trek: The Next Generation toy lines. Galoob’s toys also delivered a smack-down with their WCW World Championship Wrestling line-up. The company also created a line-up of mutant aliens, the Biker Mice from Mars.
Galoob used in-production prototypes in their images, as these catalogs were prepared before the lines were released. This meant that the featured toys often differed from the retail releases. Moreover, toys sometimes appeared only on these catalog pages, as they were canceled or never hit retail store shelves.
