While audiences first met Rambo in the 1985 movie, he was set to hit toy shelves in 1986. This 1986 Coleco Rambo Toy Fair Catalog page presented the details of one of the S.A.V.A.G.E. soldiers: Gripper, whose legal name was unknown. This character had several distinguishing physical characteristics, from being a 6’1”, 210 lb man to wearing a black eyepatch and red beret. It also covered his military specialties, like excelling in hand-to-hand combat.

Before GRIPPER joined the French Foreign Legion, he was a mercenary fighter who couldn’t get a job. No army would have him because of his infamous reputation as a ruthless fighter. The tough Foreign Legion sent GRIPPER to a dangerous desert outpost. After two months, they kicked him out because he would not acknowledge an enemy’s white surrender flag.

GRIPPER’S vise grip held his weapons very tightly, so he preferred using it over his real hand. His weapons were specially adapted to fit into his iron fist. When he met the new S.A.V.A.G.E. Army members he loved to shake their hands so they would get the surprise of their lives.

GRIPPER had threatened that the next time he met RAMBO he would carve his initials into RAMBO’s chest.

About Our Coleco Toy Fair Catalog Scans

To promote their upcoming slate of products, Coleco handed out catalogs to toy fair and other event attendees like dealers and retailers. Each catalog was filled with information about their newest toys, even ones still in development. Thus, they were often provided the first looks at action figures, playsets, vehicles, and more from their lines. Thus, they have become valuable and rare collector’s items.

These Coleco Toy Fair Catalogs featured toys from their beloved lines. For instance, the Sectaurs, who combined insects with superheroes, appeared in multiple catalogs. Likewise, Coleco produced and promoted the Rambo toy line, which focused on the cartoon series. There were also many vehicles and toys from the Starcom toy line.

Coleco used in-production prototypes in their images as these catalogs were prepared before the lines were released. This meant that the featured toys often differed from the retail releases. Moreover, toys sometimes appeared only in these catalog pages, as they were canceled or never hit retail store shelves.

While Coleco only handed these booklets out to trade professionals, we have now made them available to all. You can explore the toys featured in these catalogs with our Coleco Toy Fair Catalog Scans. This is a rare treat since catalogs like these have become increasingly difficult to locate with each passing year.
