1984 Mattel Toy Fair Catalog – Page 49 – Masters of the Universe

Wheeljack’s Lab invites you to explore the 1984 Mattel Toy Fair Catalog. Since catalogs like this were originally distributed at trade shows, the general public rarely saw them. Thus, few could see glimpses of upcoming toy lines and products. Luckily, our high-definition scans now allow you to view the promotional images of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe action figures.

The 1984 Mattel Toy Fair Catalog promoted a multitude of He-Man and Masters of the Universe action figures, vehicles, and playsets. This toy line propelled Mattel to new heights when it launched in 1982. He-Man became one of the most beloved characters by catalyzing the rising popularity of sword and sorcery media. Moreover, the company designed the bodies so that the molds could easily be reused to produce multiple characters. Mattel was ready to introduce many new action figures in 1984.

This 1984 Mattel Toy Fair Catalog page began by highlighting Cat. No. 4892, the Roton Vehicle. This fiendishly evil assault vehicle was the latest addition to Skeletor and his evil henchmen’s weaponry. Crushing blades rotated as Roton cut a path forward. Two front-mounted laser guns afforded further protection. Players could actually hear the sound as the blades rotated!

Next was Cat. No. 4903, the Road Ripper. A newly introduced warrior carrier, He-man and his warriors had a high-speed ground assault vehicle to ride into battle! Propelled by a high-powered flywheel, the Road Ripper could cut a track through the most stubborn obstacles. A rip cord activated this vehicle’s powers, allowing players to determine its power.

The final item on this page was Cat. No. 7303, the Weapons Pack, which provided arms and armor for Masters of the Universe action figures. The blister pack included 2 laser guns, 4 hand weapons, shoulder armor, 2 breastplates, a shield, and a whip.

About Our Mattel Toy Fair Catalog Scans

Mattel handed out catalogs to attendees of toy fairs and other events, such as dealers and retailers, to promote their upcoming slate of products. Each catalog contained information about the company’s newest toys, even ones still in development. Thus, companies often included first looks at action figures, playsets, vehicles, etc. Therefore, they have become valuable and rare collector’s items.

These Mattel Toy Fair Catalogs featured toys from their beloved lines. For instance, the company created the highly successful He-Man and the Masters of the Universe action figures. It also revolutionized the toy vehicle marketplace with the Hot Wheels toy line. Accompanying He-Man was the sister line, She-Ra: Princess of Power. Mattel even served Marvel fans with the Secret Wars action figures.

Mattel used in-production prototypes in their images as these catalogs were prepared before the lines were released. This meant that the featured toys often differed from the retail releases. Moreover, toys sometimes appeared only on these catalog pages, as they were canceled or never hit retail store shelves.

While Mattel only handed these booklets out to trade professionals, we have now made them available to all. You can explore the toys featured in these catalogs with our Mattel Toy Fair Catalog Scans. This is a rare treat since catalogs like these have become increasingly difficult to locate with each passing year.
