1983 IDEAL Toy Fair Catalog – Page 23 – Manglors

We invite you to explore the pages of the 1983 IDEAL Toy Fair Catalog with our high-definition scans. These catalogs were originally handed out to trade professionals like dealers, retailers, and other vendors. Because of this exclusivity, many toy collectors have never seen these pages. Moreover, these catalogs often featured prototype and in-production toys, so there may be differences between the photographed toys and the final product.

One of the most memorable toy lines from the 1983 IDEAL Toy Fair Catalog was the Manglors, creatures with otherworldly fun. IDEAL, hoping to embrace creative play, created the Manglors toy line in the early 1980s. They designed these toys to be stretched, pulled apart, and stuck back together using a malleable material. The name indicated to consumers that these toys were designed to be mangled.

This 1983 IDEAL Toy Fair Catalog page presented information on Item No. 49734, Manglor Mountain Volcanic Lava Pit. Manglor Mountain was a volcanic lava pit environment-playset for the Manglors Action Aliens. IDEAL styled this mountain from the depths of the earth, so it resembled a rocky cauldron filled with fluids from the inner earth. When players pressed down on the gargoyle’s tongue, the set bubbled and gurgled up the Manglor. Then, they could lift the Iron Maiden cage where he’s imprisoned. Thus, the Manglor came out of his environment and into the player’s. This set came complete with one Manglors Action Alien.

About Our IDEAL Toy Fair Catalog Scans

IDEAL handed out catalogs to attendees of toy fairs and other events, such as dealers and retailers, to promote their upcoming slate of products. Each catalog contained information about the company’s newest toys, even ones still in development. Thus, companies often included first looks at action figures, playsets, vehicles, and more. Therefore, they have become valuable and rare collector’s items.

These IDEAL Toy Fair Catalogs featured toys from their beloved lines. For instance, the company created the Manglors, creatures built to be stretched and mangled. IDEAL also produced the Robo Force toy line in the 1980s, which featured Maxx Steele. There were also the Living Legends of the Old West, a line featuring characters like The Lone Ranger.

IDEAL used in-production prototypes in their images as these catalogs were prepared before the lines were released. This meant that the featured toys often differed from the retail releases. Moreover, toys sometimes appeared only in these catalog pages, as they were canceled or never hit retail store shelves.

While IDEAL only handed these booklets out to trade professionals, we have now made them available to all. You can explore the toys featured in these catalogs with our IDEAL Toy Fair Catalog Scans. This is a rare treat since catalogs like these have become increasingly difficult to locate with each passing year.
