How Many Sectaurs Action Figures Are There?

A World Like No Other

The Sectaurs were a unique toy line in a competitive toy scene in the 1980s. Even though they were not particularly successful in the 80s, their popularity has grown with time as collectors have seen the line’s ingenuity. Coleco, the manufacturer of the toy line, put work into the world-building, giving each character an in-depth backstory. The story of Sectaurs starts on Symbion, a planet where a genetic experiment fails, causing the inhabitants to become like insects. Arachnids and insects grow to disturbing sizes, and humans take on insect-like forms. The inhabitants became telepathically bonded (telebonded) to the insectoid creatures, sharing each other’s pleasures and pains. With such a complex world, it is easy to wonder how many unique Sectaurs figures exist. Keep reading to learn about each Sectaurs character!

Action Figures

The Sectaurs toy line introduced us to eight individual characters from the planet Symbion. There were four characters on each opposing “team.” There were the Citizens of the Shining Realm and the Denizens of the Dark Domain. Dargon, Pinsor, Mantor, and Zak belonged to the Citizens of the Shining Realm. Spidrax, Skulk, Waspax, and Skito belonged to the Denizens of the Dark Domain.

Citizens of the Shining Realm

Dargon:

Prince Dargon of the Shining Realm was born to King Markor, The Mighty. His weapons of choice are a Skall shield and the Vengun, an automatic venom-tipped dart gun. Dargon telebonded to his Steed, DragonFlyer, a gentle giant with high pain tolerance. The Night Fighting version of Dargon comes with his insectoid sidekick, Parafly. Parafly can create an ultraviolet light that causes himself and Dargon to become invisible to others.

Pinsor:

Pinsor, Dargon’s best friend, came from a peasant background. He is a reliable friend and combat partner with sharp instincts and a willingness to protect his friends. Pinsor is incredibly strong and has massive claws, making weapons unnecessary for him to succeed. He telebonded to his Steed, Battle Beetle.

Mantor:

Mantor is the Chief Counselor for King Markor. His past is unknown, as he chooses to confide in no one. He is a master of Kai, a martial art. Mantor is also a member of the secret society, “Keepers of the Way.” Mantor also has The Seeing Eye and the ability to induce trances. Mantor’s wisdom and power make him an incredible asset in battle. Mantor telebonded to Raplor. Raplor has exceptional climbing skills perfect for capturing Mantor’s enemies among steep terrain.

Zak:

Zak is a young, brash, fun-seeking soldier. His weapon of choice is the Slazor, which shoots gas-filled pellets that explode at impact. Zak telebonded to his insectoid, Bitaur. Bitaur and Zak work together well, as Bitaur and Zak both have short tempers and are a little lazy. Bitaur has an impenetrable shell and razor-sharp teeth.

Denizens of the Dark Domain

Spidrax:

General Spidrax is a ruthless servant of Empress Devora, driven by an insatiable hunger to take control of all of Symbion. His weapons of choice are the Skall shield and a whip made from the venomous antenna of the Triceralon, a feared beast. Spidrax telebonded to SpiderFlyer, his Steed.

Skulk:

Skulk was left to die on Empress Devora’s steps as a foundling. The Empress spared his life, and she taught him the ways of the court – deceit and cunningness to gain favor. Skulk is excellent at scouting and espionage. He prefers to disarm enemies from afar by poison or dagger. Skulk telebonded to his Steed, Trancula.

Waspax:

Commander Waspax is an egotistical competitor determined to win the favor of the Empress. He is an expert swordsman, and his weapon of choice is the Skall saber. Waspax telebonded to his insectoid sidekick, Wingid. He has trained Wingid to be an assassin. Wingid has venomous antennae and is very quick. He is just as arrogant as Waspax.

Skito:

Skito is well-known to be “The Sly One.” He has a vicious desire for blood. He has no loyalties. His weapon of choice is the stalk of Skall, sharpened to a lethal point. Skito telebonded to his insectoid, Toxcid. Toxcid can fire paralyzing venom from his snout and always attacks from behind. Skito enjoys mistreating Toxcid, causing the insectoid to remain faithful out of fear rather than loyalty.

Steeds

Four of the action figures also had “hands-in” Steeds. The Steeds are controlled by the owner of the toys using puppets. “Hands-in” play was a new concept, adding much fun to children’s playtime.

DragonFlyer:

DragonFlyer, Dargon’s mighty Steed, is the fastest winged insectoid, and he is the prize of the Shining Realm. He has razor-sharp fangs, endurance, competence, and intelligence on the battlefield, making him an incredible ally.

Battle Beetle:

Battle Beetle, Pinsor’s powerful Steed, is fueled by nervous energy. He requires constant attention to prevent him from going berserk. He is relentless. Battle Beetle destroys his enemies until there are none left. The one thing that calms him down is the voice of Pinsor.

SpiderFlyer:

SpiderFlyer is the despicable Spidrax’s Steed. Strangely enough, however, SpiderFlyer trusts only Spidrax. The Steed has multiple eyes, like his master, causing him to be nearly impossible to creep up on. His most virtuous trait, however, is his venom-coated web which renders his victims unconscious immediately upon contact.

Trancula:

Trancula is brutal and sadistic. His size destroys everything in his path, and his jaws can rip through almost anything. However, Trancula can become easily distracted by hunger and becomes angrier as his appetite grows.

The Hyve Playset

The Hyve is one of the largest playsets from its day. Measuring three feet tall, it helped children feel engrossed in the world of Symbion. The play set has 2 sides – an interior and an exterior. There are 7 action features: a landing pad for Flyers, trap door, wrecking ball, trick bridge, rotating machine gun, combination secret passageway, barred jail cell, and ladders and ledges for climbing. The set also includes two “hands-in” puppets: a giant spider called Narr and a finger puppet snake called Vypex.

Totals

In total, we have thirteen unique Sectaurs toys. There are 8 action figures. Some of the action figures had insectoid sidekicks. There are four additional Steeds, two paired with Citizens of the Shining Realm and two paired with Denizens of the Dark Domain. Finally, we have the Hyve playset. Though this toy line was small, short-lived, and received poorly in its time, hindsight has allowed us to see its authentic charm and appeal.

Bio: I am the founder and owner of Wheeljack’s Lab pop Culture and Toy Shop. My vision has always been to reunite customers with their favorite childhood toys and pop culture, triggering fond memories, and reigniting their imaginations. Every day, I work in the “lab” where it’s Christmas 365 days a year. I scour the internet, like when we had the Sears Catalog of yesteryear, for the next great treasure. Then, I await the arrival of the postman as if he were Santa Claus himself and helping collectors worldwide with their versions of Christmas. Every day as a vintage toy buyer is an absolute joy!
