Introduction

The late 1970s saw with it the Battle of the Planets, an American adaptation of the Japanese anime Science Ninja Team Gatchaman. Its compelling storylines and iconic characters struck a chord with millions of viewers. And where there’s a popular show, merchandise is sure to follow. This brings us to a compelling question, when were the first Battle of the Planets action figures made?

The First Battle of the Planets Action Figures and Toys

The first Battle of the Planets toys entered the scene in 1979. Henry Gordy, Inc. produced just a few gun and radio toys. At this time, however, the American market for the Battle of the Planets did not have nearly the same success as it did in Japan. In 1979, Popy created die-cast vehicles for the Gatchaman series and sequels in Japan. They also produced 3 ¾” G-Force action figures that spread across Europe. Since then, the franchise has seen many manufacturers revisit the world of Battle of the Planets.

The 1979 Series

In line with the show’s famous characters, the initial action figures included the beloved G-Force team – Mark, Jason, Princess, Keyop, and Tiny. These action figures stood at an approximate height of 3 ¾ inches and were outfitted in their recognizable bird-themed attire. Each figure was not only visually appealing, but they also boasted an exciting feature: the unique ‘action’ function. A small lever on the back of each figure enabled the arms to move, simulating the action-packed scenes of the television series.

Bio: I am the founder and owner of Wheeljack’s Lab pop Culture and Toy Shop. My vision has always been to reunite customers with their favorite childhood toys and pop culture, triggering fond memories, and reigniting their imaginations. Every day, I work in the “lab” where it’s Christmas 365 days a year. I scour the internet, like when we had the Sears Catalog of yesteryear, for the next great treasure. Then, I await the arrival of the postman as if he were Santa Claus himself and helping collectors worldwide with their versions of Christmas. Every day as a vintage toy buyer is an absolute joy!
