Catching up on Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous

Catching up on Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous

Even before Isla Nublar became a Fallen Kingdom, plans to create an animated series, which would later become Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous began floating around. Despite the bitter taste that 2018’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom left in the mouths of fans, the film earned over a billion dollars worldwide. Thus, the plans for an animated take on the franchise continued to steam along. By 2019, Zack Stentz and Scott Kreamer had developed the show enough to announce that the CGI series would appear on Netflix in a year.

While this would be the first animated version of the Jurassic franchise, the characters and dinosaurs of Jurassic World appeared in other animated shows. Most notably, LEGO brought their Jurassic World theme to life with their 2018 short, LEGO Jurassic World: The Secret Exhibit. They also returned in 2019 to present a new animated series, LEGO Jurassic World: Legend of Isla Nublar. However, both featured stories and hijinks that are typical of LEGO’s animated productions. So, Jurassic Park/World fans continued to await the debut of Camp Cretaceous.

Their wait paid off as Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous debuted on Netflix’s streaming service on September 18, 2020. Rather than pick up from the events of Fallen Kingdom, this series opted to go back to the days when Jurassic World was operating. Thus, the series could once again capture the formula that made Jurassic Park work, an awe that turned into horror. With its strong cast of characters and reverence for the park’s legacy, Camp Cretaceous quickly became a hit.

The Campers from Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous

Darius Bowman

Darius Bowman

Thanks to the legacy of Jurassic Park, Darius Bowman grew up in a world that knew that dinosaurs once again lived and walked on the Earth. Rather than taking their existence for granted, he became deeply fascinated by these titanic beasts. Likewise, his father, Fredrick Bowman, shared his enthusiasm for dinosaurs, creating a deep bond between the two of them. As the pair delved into the research of dinosaurs, especially any research from Alan Grant, they began to dream of visiting Jurassic World one day. Cementing their dream, they exchanged gifts as they promised each other that they would visit the park together.

Despite the lofty dream, reality hit the pair as Fedrick became bedridden from a serious illness. As he lay on his death bed, Fedrick taught his son that despite plans not going the way they want, he should never let go of his dreams. Darius became even more determined to visit Jurassic World, not only for himself but also in his father’s memory.

As he sought a means to visit the park, Darius learned that a Jurassic World VR game offered an exclusive ticket to the park to the first person to beat the game. While many attempted, not even Darius immediately found the correct means to beat the game. However, a flash of inspiration led Darius to research the dinosaurs before he became the first person to conquer the game. Thus, he became one of the lucky campers at Jurassic World’s Camp Cretaceous.

Brooklyn

Brooklyn

Brooklyn made a name for herself on the internet as she successfully traveled the world, streaming her exploits. By the time she was ten years old, Brooklyn made a name for herself as she continued to vlog from her screen name, BrooklynUnboxesTheWorld. Over the years, she gained twenty-seven million followers, who she titled Brooklanders in her youth. As she made content for her vlog, she hosted several videos that offered survival tips that would later help her on Isla Nublar.

Since she became an internet star at an early age, Brooklyn could not relate to the typical high school experiences that her fellow campers had. Instead of attending a typical high school, Brooklyn was home-schooled, with most of her classes coming from online learning institutions. While her studies academically taught her about the world, she faltered when it came to typical teenage conversations. She also did not know what a school building looked like.

To support her vlog, Brooklyn entered various sponsorships, leading to her likeness appearing on a display for phone chargers on the Main Street market. When the group located this display, she admitted that she had forgotten that she even agreed to it. So, either the chaos on the island pushed the sponsorship from her mind, or she had so many that she had lost track.

As Brooklyn entered Camp Cretaceous, she promised her followers that she would reveal the secrets of the park. Thus, she snuck around to locate ground-breaking never-before-seen news.

Kenji Kon

Kenji Kon

As the son of a wealthy family, Kenji never had to work hard to see his wants and desires met. Since Jurassic World opened to the public, his father bought a penthouse on the island, allowing Kenji to become a frequent VIP guest at the park. So, he frequently explored the island, even the underground passages. As the years passed, Kenji became bored with the standard dinosaur, reflecting the mindset of Jurassic World executives that greenlit the Indominus Rex project.

Even though Kenji’s financial needs were easily met, he felt neglected due to his absent father. While he referenced a woman, “Candy”, he never spoke of his mother. Whether his mother is absent, dead, or otherwise removed from his life is unknown though. As Kenji aged, he became disheartened by the absence of his father and family.

In exchange for not being a large part of Kenji’s life, his father provided Kenji ample opportunity to do as he pleased. Accustomed to getting his way and having staff attend to his needs, Kenji developed a self-serving mindset, rarely performing menial tasks for himself. Thus, he often sat back and watched his fellow campers as they gathered water and supplies so that they could survive. Even though he lacked the motivation to work, he strongly cared for the rest of the group.

Yasmina Fadoula

Yasmina Fadoula

As an international track star, Yasmina Fadoula disciplined her mind and body every day. Not only did she enjoy mastering track and field events, but she also took diving lessons since she was seven years old. Thus, by the time that she came to Jurassic World as a VIP guest at Camp Cretaceous. Since she gained a reputation as a prominent athlete, Jurassic World sponsored her athletic career and events.

Even though Yasmina attended high school like any typical teenager, her rigorous training regimen distanced her from her peers. Thus, she developed a solitary lifestyle where friendships were secondary. Compounding on her lifestyle, she was an introvert who preferred to solo activities, like drawing, in her free time. To help distance herself from others, she upheld a gruff and sarcastic attitude.

Despite her strongest attempts to remain distant while at Camp Cretaceous, Yasmina warmed up to the overtly friendly attitude of her fellow camper, Sammy. Even after Sammy revealed that Mantah Corp sent her to the park as a spy, she quickly forgave the girl because of her honest demeanor.

As chaos erupted in the park, Yasmina pushed herself to survive. Even after she severely injured her ankle, she refused to slow down and give in to the pain. When questioned how she could even walk with her injury, she only explained that she was highly motivated.

Ben Fitzgerald Pincus

Ben Fitzgerald Pincus

Before Ben Pincus arrived at Camp Cretaceous, he was a shy boy who allowed his phobias to control his life. In addition to normal fears, like dangerous situations, he was an extreme germaphobe and even disliked benign products, like whipped cream. In a bid to help him overcome his fears, Ben’s mother, an employee of the Masrani Global Corporation, obtained a free pass for her son to attend Camp Cretaceous.

Despite his mother’s hopes, while Jurassic World was running properly, Ben showed no inclinations to face his fears. Instead, he doubled down on his germaphobe ways, insisting that his fellow campers keep up their hygiene with disinfecting lotions and the like.

Despite his zoophobia, Ben quickly bonded with a newborn Ankylosaur that had a slight deformation, who he affectionally named Bumpy. Since Ben had been the first individual that Bumpy saw after she hatched, the Ankylosaur quickly bonded to him. In some ways, Ben saw her asymmetrical difference as a reflection of him, who felt looked down upon because he liked things that others considered strange and different.

As Ben struggled to survive on the island, he faced his fears in ways his mother never dreamed of. By the end of the first season, Ben became confident enough to stand up for himself. He even risked his life to try to switch the monorail’s track. However, his largest changes occurred after pteranodons flung him off the monorail, where he had to survive on his own for several weeks.

Sammy Gutierrez

Sammy Gutierrez

Growing up on her family ranch, Sammy Gutierrez formed a strong bond with her family. She desired nothing more than to help her family succeed in life. So, when her family began to drown in debt, Sammy felt pressured to accept the offer from Mantah Corp, who paid for her to attend Camp Cretaceous. In return, they expected her to spy on the park and gather confidential information on the park’s endeavors.

To cover her reasons for being at Camp Cretaceous, Sammy claimed that her family supplied the meat that the dinosaurs fed on daily. This claim also kept her family’s fiscal crisis hidden from the public eye. Despite her deceitful purpose for being on the island, Sammy was earnest in her desire to befriend her fellow campers. She also felt terrible about the fact that she had to lie about being a spy.

Unfortunately, Sammy was not the best spy that Mantah Corp could have sent. Within days of arriving at Camp Cretaceous, Brooklyn caught Sammy sneaking around while she was making a video for her vlog. Having her activities potentially revealed on the video, Sammy stole Brooklyn’s phone. Unfortunately, Brooklyn was already suspicious of Sammy and quickly pointed the finger at her.

Since Sammy was open and friendly with the other campers, even the most aloof of campers, Yasmina, came to her defense. Unfortunately, their trust in Sammy hit a large pothole as Sammy revealed that she did steal Brooklyn’s phone and was a spy for Mantah Corp.

What has led up to Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous’s fourth season?

Season 1

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous Season 1

As the Masrani Global Corporation bought Isla Nublar and the rights to Jurassic Park from InGen, they moved to create a working park, now known as Jurassic World, in 2005. As the years passed, the park gained fans from across the world, including Fredrick Bowman and his son, Darius, who both dreamed of visiting the park one day. While Fredrick died before he realized this dream, Darius became the lucky winner of a VR experience, gaining entry into the park’s newest experience: Camp Cretaceous.

As Darius arrived at the park, he met up with his fellow campers, Ben Pincus, Brooklyn, Kenji Kon, Sammy Gutierrez, and Yasmina Fadoula. Each of them gained entry to the camp via various sponsorships or rich parents, so they all met for the first time as camp began.

For the first few days, Camp Cretaceous ran smoothly, following the itinerary as planned. However, as the campers went on a tour to Dr. Wu’s lab, Brooklyn and Sammy both snuck around to view confidential information. After Dr. Wu caught Brooklyn in his office, he kicked out the campers.

Meanwhile, Kenji convinced Darius to sneak around the park to view an exclusive Carnotaurus, which was too aggressive for the general public to view. Meanwhile, a simple gyrosphere tour turned dangerous as the dinosaurs became spooked and began to stampede.

The Indominus Rex breaks out

Midway through the Camp Cretaceous experience, Jurassic World experienced a catastrophe that brought down the park. Their newest creation, the Indominus Rex, broke free from its containment and began a rampage through the park. As the hybrid dinosaur terrorized the island, he brought down the systems that contained the other dinosaurs. So, Jurassic World began to evacuate everyone off the island.

Unfortunately, the campers were far from the main street area when the evacuations began. For, they decided to climb up a watchtower so that they could investigate a new roar that they heard. Unaware of the danger they were in, they soon found themselves in danger as the Indominus Rex spotted them and began to pull down the watchtower. Ziplining to safety, the campers found themselves in the middle of Isla Nublar’s jungle with no choice but to hike to safety.

They thought that they found a way off the island as they boarded a tram to the South Ferry Dock. As night fell, their safe passage became one of the most dangerous spots on the island, for the tram’s lights attracted pteranodons. While they managed to avoid a collision with another tram, one of the pteranodons yanked Ben to plummet to the jungle below.

As the campers forged their way through the camp, they encountered the Carnotaurus, Toro, on multiple occasions. By the end of the season, the campers worked together to fend off Toro, subjecting her to a devastating explosion.

Season 2

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous Season 2

Having missed all ferries off the island, the survivors of Camp Cretaceous arrived at the Main Street market to gather supplies. While they had wanted to set up a shelter there, they soon realized that the Tyrannosaurus Rex roamed the streets of Main Street, making it her home. So, they quickly retreated to make a shelter elsewhere on the island.

As the weeks passed, the campers became more accustomed to their new lives as survivors in Jurassic World. Even Kenji began to learn to pull his weight so that they could survive on the island. As free-roaming dinosaurs now filled the island, Darius began taking notes on the habits of these dinosaurs. He also discovered a watering hole where both predators and herbivores drank in peace.

Elsewhere, Ben managed to survive his disastrous fall from the tram. Even though he survived, he was now completely alone, not knowing where the other campers were. However, Bumpy quickly located Ben and kept him company during his first few days alone in the park. Eventually, Ben became frustrated and scared Bumpy away. Regretting that he was now completely alone, Ben decided to toughen up and face the creature that was keeping him from exploring the rest of the island, Toro.

The hunt is on

After weeks alone on the island, the Campers became enthusiastic as they spotted three other islands on the island, Tiff, Mitch, and Happ. While Tiff and Mitch warmly greet the children, claiming to be eco-tourists, Happ, the pair’s security and guide, openly disliked the presence of the children. He also venomously kept them away from the yurt, which Brooklyn and Kenji become determined to break into.

As Happ captures Brooklyn and Kenji, he announced that he would take care of them himself. Thus, the pair ran into the jungle to escape him. As Happ caught up to the pair, Ben arrived to knock out Happ. As they held Happ prisoner, they found that he meant them no harm and wanted to remove them from the island. When the campers were in mortal danger, he sacrificed himself to a trio of baryonyx so that the children could safely escape.

On the other hand, Darius and Sammy found themselves in danger when Tiff and Mitch revealed their true intentions. Rather than wanting to observe the dinosaurs on the plant, this pair of game hunters wanted to hunt the most dangerous creatures on earth. Thus, they abused Darius’s notebook to gain access to the watering hole.

On her way to the watering hole, Tiff slew one of the baryonyx trio. After the campers thwarted the hunters, they forced the pair to retreat to their boat offshore. As they retreated, Mitch fell victim to his trap before Tiff left him to his fate. While the Tyrannosaurus ate Mitch, Tiff made it to the yacht to only die to the two surviving baryonyx.

Season 3

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous Season 3

While the children had a moment of hope when they found Mitch and Tiff’s abandoned yacht, they soon experienced new problems as ouranosaurus surrounded and attack the boat. While the boat survived the attack, the hull suffered extreme damage and required repairs. So, the campers agreed to tock near Kenji’s penthouse so that they could gather supplies and repair the boat.

While onshore, the campers soon found themselves face to face with a new threat, the Scorpios Rex. This creature was one of the earliest successful hybrids that Dr. Wu created. However, it proved to be much more dangerous than any had anticipated, viciously attacking anything on sight. After the Scorpios Rex attacked Dr. Wu, nearly killing him with its poison barbs, the science team had to terminate the project. Thus, the hybrid had remained in cold storage in Jurassic World’s underground labs.

Thanks to Jurassic World breaking down, the generators that kept the Scorpios Rex in cold storage broke down. Now free, the hybrid terrorized the island, killing without rhyme or reason. Despite this creature’s ferocity, it had one exploitable weakness: it became entranced by fire. As they struggled to even survive the Scorpios Rex’s savagery, Sammy fell victim to one of its poisonous barbs. Refusing to let her friend die, Yasmina risked her life to get the antivenom serum that Dr. Wu had in his lab.

Surviving the Fallen Kingdom

Even after the campers escaped the pair of Scorpios Rex, their voyage to safety was far from over. As they sailed away from the island, a group of helicopters intercepted them and forced them to dock once more at the island. There, they discovered that a group of mercenaries was scouring the island.

While they watch the Tyrannosaurs and Mosasaurus attack and slay the mercenaries, Dr. Wu returned to Isla Nublar to obtain his laptop. Since they had suffered at the claws of Dr. Wu’s creations, the campers formed a plan to steal the laptop so that they could present it to the authorities. Before they could escape with the laptop, one of Dr. Wu’s men, Hawks, took Brooklyn captive.

With Brooklyn in their grasp, Dr. Wu demanded the return of his laptop within two hours in return for her safety. While they wanted to free Brooklyn, Darius also refused to let Dr. Wu get away with his research. So, he planned to copy and wipe the laptop’s hard drive. Refusing to put Brooklyn’s life on the line, Kenji took the laptop before the wiping process was complete.

As Kenji secured Brooklyn’s safety, Ben arrived with Bumpy and her heard to fend off Dr. Wu. During the attack, the ankylosaurs crushed the laptop. Even without the laptop, Dr. Wu did not leave empty-handed, for his team had recovered a sample of the Indominus Rex. Meanwhile, the children once again sailed away on the yacht.

Looking forward to Season 4

Even though Camp Cretaceous has caught up to the events of Fallen Kingdom, the story is not complete. Season four will hit Netflix on December third. While the children may have escaped from Isla Nublar, they will soon experience new perils on another island filled with dinosaurs. They will even meet up with an old foe from the third film, the Spinosaurus.
