What to do before you sell?

Before you start looking into how to sell your Godaikin action figures, there are a few things to do to maximize the money you get for them.

Whose Toys Were They?

1984 Bandai Dyjupiter

It is much easier to sell your toys if you were the original owner. It is exceedingly difficult to sell collections if they were not always yours. This is especially true if there are multiple lines or brands of toys in your collection! In that case, we encourage you to send us an email before reading any further, so we can better help you.

Identify and Organize Your Collection

First, make sure to be as careful as you can when handling your Godaikin toys, since it can be hard to guess which ones might be valuable. Some toys could carry a higher price than you would expect! The size and materials are not always the best indicator of value, so treat everything with care.

We suggest you first organize the toys that you know, and sort your collection by brand, as that is one of the easier ways to tell toys apart. Sort them as best as you can. This step is much easier if you are the original owner since you are more likely to remember specifics.

Assign Values to Your Vintage Toys

The next thing you need to do is figure out what price to sell your Godaikin toys at! We recommend that you check a variety of online marketplaces, such as eBay, to see what prices similar toys have sold at recently. You can check active listings or sold listings but be careful to only rely on sold listings. Active listings will not necessarily sell for the price that the seller is asking for, after all! Meanwhile, if you look only at previously sold toys, you will know exactly what they were and how much they fetched, and that is the most important thing to know when setting your prices.

That said, you will need to look at more than just the price they sold at. The same toy can sell for as little as $15 or as much as $100 based on factors beyond just what the toy is. The toy’s condition, the presence of a box or optional parts, what sort of environment it was stored in, and many other factors can all come into play when figuring out the price of any given toy.

As with anything, toys that are in better condition and that are not missing any pieces will fetch higher prices, so take a good look at your toy. Is it pristine, or is it well-loved? Is it missing any of the pieces or accessories that it came with? Does it still have a box? Is the box faded? Damaged? Clean? Sealed? All these things can swing the price of your toy and all to varying degrees. It can be hard to accurately judge the condition of your old toys, but it can give you an idea of where on the price scale it will fall!

Are Your Toys Clean?

It is a sad fact of life that some collections will get dirty whether you want them to or not, and collections that have had run-ins with mice or insects, which are covered in pet hair, or that are dusty tend to not be collections that people want. Unfortunately, the cleanliness of your toys will affect how your Godaikin toys will sell.

If you have stored your toys in an open box, dust will cake them. If storage location is hot, their plastics will warp or become brittle. Storing them in areas that are too dry or too wet could also cause similar problems. If their storage location has exposure to sunlight, plastic will fade or, worse yet, become sun-bleached. And if you have smokers in your home, there is a good chance the smoke has discolored your toys, to say nothing of the smell.

All these things can lower the value of your toys, but there are ways to reverse some of these processes. Ask yourself if your toys are affected by any of these, and then check out our how-to guide for tips on how to restore your toys!

How to Sell Your Old and Used Godaikin Toys

1984 Bandai Godaikin Bio Dragon

This is the part you have been waiting for! Now that you have sorted and evaluated your collection, it is time to cover how to sell your used Godaikin toys! There are a variety of ways to find buyers for your collectibles, and we suggest you use the one that works the best for you. Before deciding, consider how long you are willing to spend trying to earn a sale, and how much effort you want to put into it.

Once you have got that in mind, here are a few options presented with their positives and negatives:

Local Auction Service

  • Pros:
    • It is easy and nearby; extraordinarily little work for you to do!
  • Cons:
    • It can take a long time to sell, the fees are high, you cannot be sure how much you are going to get, and (unless you work with one of the few specialists in the country and are selling a particularly large collection) you are not going to get particularly satisfactory results.

Pawnshop

  • Pros:
    • Again, it is easy and nearby, and there’s little work for you to do beyond bringing in your toys.
  • Cons:
    • You are not going to get anywhere near full value. Because they know you want cash in hand, they will try to assign an extremely low value—usually without actual knowledge of the toy’s worth—so that they can be sure that they can later make a profit themselves.

Local Toy Dealer

  • Pros:
    • You do not have to spend a long time working with them since they can use their established network to sell the toy quickly. There are also no fees to worry about, and once again it is local. You can even check them out with the Better Business Bureau to get some peace of mind!
  • Cons:
    • Like with pawn shops, they will usually offer you a low price since they know you want cash in hand, and they want to make their profit. This is especially true if you show up with an ample collection since they know you will not want the hassle of having to box them all back up after taking them out to show the dealer.

eBay and Other Online Auction Sites

  • Pros:
    • There are lots of users and you will never get a price below what you ask for unless you specifically allow that.
  • Cons:
    • It can take a long time to get a sale, taking pictures and shipping can take a lot of time. Also, if you are selling a collection you could end up having to take multiple trips to the post office since the toys will not necessarily all sell to the same person or at the same time. Fees are also high. Furthermore, you can never know how the bidding will go nor if the site presents your listings in front of the right buyers. There are also the issues of potential fraud, the requirement that you accept returns (even if a toy becomes damaged in transit after leaving your hands!). Then, there is the general difficulty of setting up a successful auction.

Online Swap Pages Like Facebook and Craigslist

  • Pros:
    • They have lots of users, and you can list your items on pages dedicated to selling exactly that sort of toy, guaranteeing you have a good chance of finding buyers. You can also get decent prices and there are no fees. As a bonus, it is easy to set up a listing!
  • Cons:
    • As with eBay, it can take a long time for the right buyer to see your listing. There is a real risk of fraud and no customer support whatsoever. If you are in a rural area it can be almost impossible to find a buyer near enough to you. And of course, there are privacy concerns when you either use an account with your real information or meet up in person. Finally, you will have to deal with a lot of people who ask questions but have no real intent to buy. Also, a lot of people will try to haggle you down well below your asking price.

Online Toy Dealer

  • Pros:
    • You will spend extraordinarily little time working with us, and we take less than a week to complete purchases. You can check us out with the Better Business Bureau, and there are no fees to worry about since we’ll even pay your shipping!
  • Cons:
    • You cannot get your toys’ full value.

Bio: I am the founder and owner of Wheeljack’s Lab pop Culture and Toy Shop. My vision has always been to reunite customers with their favorite childhood toys and pop culture, triggering fond memories, and reigniting their imaginations. Every day, I work in the “lab” where it’s Christmas 365 days a year. I scour the internet, like when we had the Sears Catalog of yesteryear, for the next great treasure. Then, I await the arrival of the postman as if he were Santa Claus himself and helping collectors worldwide with their own versions of Christmas. Every day as a vintage toy buyer is an absolute joy!
