Galaxy Warriors Toy Checklist

As the Masters of the Universe action figure line gained popularity, many smaller toy companies wanted to replicate their impressive sales. The first companies to create action figures with similar body structures earned themselves a trip to court with Mattel. However, the court ruled that the body type of He-Man could not be copywritten. Because of this, companies like Sungold made a knock-off version of He-Man. They were the Galaxy Warriors. When did the first Galaxy Warriors action figures become available?

The First Galaxy Warriors Action Figures

In the 1980s, the action figure market was booming, thanks to the success of famous lines like Star Wars and G.I. Joe. Capitalizing on this trend, Sungold introduced the Galaxy Warriors action figures in 1983. With their blend of sci-fi and fantasy elements, these figures quickly gained attention. They were desirable as a similar option to He-Man, and they were cheaper.

The Galaxy Warriors action figures were 3.75 inches tall, similar to other popular action figures of the time, and were crafted from durable plastic. Each figure had multiple points of articulation, allowing for various dynamic poses and play options. The characters boasted vibrant colors, futuristic armor, and striking weapon accessories, further adding to their appeal.

Galaxy Warriors Characters

Sungold designed 12 characters for the toy line: Ygg, Dragoon, Dino Man, Huk, Baltard, Magnon, Thor, Tiger Man, Anubi, Sahak, Triton, and Spikes. Although the cast was diverse, they all shared the same body type. They also had no backstories, so players had to decide who was good and evil.

Sungold later released two versions of the Galaxy Warriors. The first had a Sungold stamp on the back of their right legs. The second version had the symbol on their backs. The paint details, head sizes, and overall color could also differentiate versions. Sungold also produced four beasts for the Galaxy Warriors to ride. The beasts were Dinosaur, Horse, Tiger, and Mammoth.

Conclusion

The first Galaxy Warriors action figures debuted in 1983, courtesy of Sungold. Despite the line being a knock-off of another successful toy line, Galaxy Warriors themselves had knock-off lines based on them. Sewco’s Galaxy Fighters is an excellent example of this. At Wheeljack’s Lab, we appreciate the historical significance of these action figures and are thrilled to connect collectors with these cherished pieces of nostalgia.
