Chogokin roughly translates to “super alloy” and the word originally appeared as a fictional material in the Mazinger Z manga. In 1972, Popy decided that this word would stand out as the name for their new line of toys, featuring die-cast metal robots. Some of these toys would later become known as the Godaikin toys. Meanwhile, in America, some of the Chogokin toys became part of the Shogun Warriors line.

After Popy merged back with Bandai in 1983, Bandai continued production of Chogokin figures, though die-cast became prohibitively expensive. Then, in 1997, Tamashii Nations, another subset of Bandai, launched the Soul of Chogokin figures, now targetting the high-end collectors. Once again, the main focus of these toys is to create die-cast figures with special effects. As a cheaper option with less die-cast, Bandai also launched the Super Robot Chogokin line.
