Digimon began as a simple virtual pet that competed against Tamagotchi in the late 1990s. However, the series gained popularity as the first cartoon series, Digimon Adventure, began airing in 1999. Since then, there have been 9 additional series and a slew of animated films that featured the titular digital monsters. Moreover, companies like Bandai have created a multitude of action figures and other toys that featured both digital monsters and their trainers.
