1996 Hasbro Toy Fair Catalog – 20 – Star Wars

We invite you to explore the pages of the 1996 Hasbro Toy Fair Catalog with our high-definition scans. This catalog was handed out to retailers and other vendors. It helped the company promote its new toy selection and sign up vendors to sell their toys. It also gave some exclusive first looks at its upcoming toys from the year.

Keeping Kenner’s most popular toy line alive, the 1996 Hasbro Toy Fair Catalog advertised the newest additions to the Star Wars brand. Even though the trilogy had ended back in the 1980s, the brand was still very popular. Moreover, the Special Editions were slotted to hit theaters in 1997. Thus, a surge of new fans was looking for toys of the iconic characters. Thus, Hasbro happily tapped into the excitement with its selection of new Star Wars toys.

This 1996 Hasbro Toy Fair Catalog page began with the 69775 Star Wars TIE Fighter, the most distinctive imperial ship ever. This toy featured ejector buttons that blasted off the solar panels. Meanwhile, an action figure could fit inside of the cockpit.

Then, there was the 69795 Star Wars Lightsaber Assortment. These were full-size reproductions of the famous Jedi Knight weapons Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader used. It featured three electronic sounds straight from the movie: a power-up, a running, and a battle crash sound. These telescoping sabers also lit up for non-stop action. These toys required 2 “C” batteries, which were not included for full functionality.

This page also promoted the 69776 Star Wars Imperial AT-ST Vehicle. Fans could operate the charging, stomping legs or rotate the turret guns 360 degrees. While an action figure could fit into the gunner station cockpit, they were sold separately.

The next item on this page was the 69780S Star Wars Electronic X-Wing Fighter. This toy felt like Luke Skywalker’s signature Starfighter, straight from the movie. It even featured real movie “laser” firing sounds. The auto-deploy wings opened with movie engine sounds. Meanwhile, the quick-lift canopy allowed an action figure to sit in the cockpit. This toy required 2 “AA” alkaline batteries, which were not included, to function.

Finally, Hasbro presented information on the 69785 Star Wars Electronic Millenium Falcon. This was a vehicle/playset with electronic lights and four real movie sounds. Opening the top section revealed the interior, which was large enough for a figure to fit inside. There was even a secret compartment in the floor. This toy required two “C” alkaline batteries, which were not included, to fully function.

About Our Hasbro Toy Fair Catalog Scans

To promote their upcoming slate of products, Hasbro handed out catalogs to attendees of toy fairs and other events. Each catalog was filled with information about their newest toys, even ones still in development. Thus, they often provided the first looks at action figures, playsets, vehicles, and more from their lines. Therefore, they have become valuable and rare collector’s items.

These Hasbro Toy Fair Catalogs featured toys from their beloved lines. For instance, the company was responsible for one of the most popular action figures of all time: G.I. Joe. They also partnered with Takara to bring the Transformers to the Western market. The company also dipped into the fantastical worlds of Air Raiders, Inhumanoids, and Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light. After Hasbro acquired Kenner, they also became the home of toy lines like Jurassic Park and Star Wars.

Hasbro used in-production prototypes in their images, as these catalogs were prepared before the lines were released. This meant that the featured toys often differed from the retail releases. Moreover, toys sometimes appeared only on these catalog pages, as they were canceled or never hit retail store shelves.

While Hasbro only handed these booklets out to trade professionals, we have now made them available to all. You can explore the toys featured in these catalogs with our Hasbro Toy Fair Catalog Scans. This is a rare treat since catalogs like these have become increasingly difficult to locate with each passing year.
