Join us on a journey through the 1989 Hasbro Toy Fair Catalog, which continued to celebrate the success of G.I. Joe and Transformers. This catalog includes exciting previews of the 1989 line-up. So, continue exploring to see some of the first previews that retailers saw of the newest action figures.
The 1989 Hasbro Toy Fair Catalog advertised a wide selection of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero action figures on page 80. After Hasbro relaunched the brand in 1982, the G.I. Joe line became the shining example of a successful multi-media-backed brand. With the assistance of Marvel, Hasbro reimagined the line so that the Joes now combatted the evil forces of Cobra. Thanks to the comics, cartoons, and fantastic toys, G.I. Joe brought in multiple fans in the following years.

On this page, Hasbro presented #6287: Cobra Adder. This six-wheeled, missile-launching vehicle featured rolling, all-terrain tires, a unique elevating launching system, and two high-powered missiles. Unfortunately, the figures were sold separately.
Next, Hasbro promoted #6059: Destro’s Despoiler. Destro called the shots as he hovered over the battlefield in his Despoiler, a hovering/flying battle craft featuring two air-to-surface missiles, jet propulsion, and swivel guns.
Then, they featured #6161: G.I. Joe Swampmasher. This unique twelve-wheeled, rolling suspension could adapt to whatever Mother Nature dished out. It featured a roll bar, a gun with a cradle, and two missiles with launchers. Once again, the figures were sold separately.
Finally, they advertised #6165: Cobra Imp. This highly mobile, missile-launching vehicle featured three removable missiles that broke apart to disperse landmines over the battlefield. Moreover, it had twenty-four mines in all. It also came with an elevating missile rack and rolling wheels.

About Our Hasbro Toy Fair Catalog Scans
To promote their upcoming slate of products, Hasbro handed out catalogs to attendees of toy fairs and other events. Each catalog was filled with information about their newest toys, even ones still in development. Thus, they often provided the first looks at action figures, playsets, vehicles, and more from their lines. Therefore, they have become valuable and rare collector’s items.
These Hasbro Toy Fair Catalogs featured toys from their beloved lines. For instance, the company was responsible for one of the most popular action figures of all time: G.I. Joe. They also partnered with Takara to bring the Transformers to the Western market. The company also dipped into the fantastical worlds of Air Raiders, Inhumanoids, and Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light. After Hasbro acquired Kenner, they also became the home of toy lines like Jurassic Park and Star Wars.
Hasbro used in-production prototypes in their images, as these catalogs were prepared before the lines were released. This meant that the featured toys often differed from the retail releases. Moreover, toys sometimes appeared only on these catalog pages, as they were canceled or never hit retail store shelves.
While Hasbro only handed these booklets out to trade professionals, we have now made them available to all. You can explore the toys featured in these catalogs with our Hasbro Toy Fair Catalog Scans. This is a rare treat since catalogs like these have become increasingly difficult to locate with each passing year.
