1988 Tyco Toy Fair Catalog – Page 87 – Ghostbusters

Wheeljack’s Lab invites you to explore the 1988 Tyco Toy Fair Catalog. Since catalogs like this were originally distributed at trade shows, the general public rarely saw them. Thus, few received the chance to view these promotional images of the company’s toys, such as the prehistoric Dino-Riders.

The 1988 Tyco Toy Fair Catalog provided information about the Filmation Ghostbusters action figures and more. Emerging around the same time as the movie series, Filmation introduced its Ghostbusters cartoon series in 1986, which revived the characters and concepts from their earlier 1975 live-action series. While Schaper Toys was initially enlisted to create the toys for the Filmation cartoon series, Tyco took over production after acquiring the company.

This 1988 Tyco Toy Fair Catalog page explained that the sensational “Ghostbusters” syndicated TV show came to life in living rooms with the Ghostbusters action figures. These figures included Prime Evil, the leader of the villainous spirits. They also included Jake Kong, Eddie Spenser, Tracy the Gorilla, and all the good guys.

On the evil side, Prime Evil was the leader of the spirit world. With the help of his band of baddies, his goal was to overrun the mortal universe and turn it into a poltergeist playground.

The page also featured short descriptions of multiple characters:

Prime Evil was the leader of the spirit world obsessed with controlling the mortal universe. He had every evil power imaginable.

Scared Stiff was a high-tech computer ghost from the future and had a problem with falling apart.

Fangster was the futuristic werewolf decked out in space-age-looking garb and a weapon belt.

Haunter was a classic aristocratic English hunter. His evil magic crossbow, affixed to his back, was used to make people mean.

Fib Face was a spirit with two faces incapable of telling the truth. The way to stop his evil magic was to start an argument between his faces.

Mysteria was a wicked spirit who was highly vain, a trait that the Ghostbusters sometimes used to defeat her.

Tyco also advertised the Ghost Buggy, No. 60776, on this 1988 Toy Fair Catalog Page. This rundown jalopy took the Ghostbusters where the work was. It could even travel forward or backward through time. This vehicle had adjustable wheels for tight passages in the spirit world. Players could pull out the wings and add the jet nose to prepare this vehicle for takeoff. Otherwise, they could put on the sub-nose and flatten the wheels to pretend the vehicle was a submarine. There was also a trunk for holding the Ghostbusting equipment and vehicle attachments.

About Our Tyco Toy Fair Catalog Scans

Tyco handed out catalogs to attendees of toy fairs and other events, such as dealers and retailers, to promote their upcoming slate of products. Each catalog contained information about the company’s newest toys, even ones still in development. Thus, companies often included first looks at action figures, playsets, vehicles, etc. Therefore, they have become valuable and rare collector’s items.

These Tyco Toy Fair Catalogs featured toys from their beloved lines. For instance, Tyco introduced the world to a fanciful prehistoric world with the Dino-Riders. They also provided motorized 4×4 fun with the Stompers vehicles. Another of Tyco’s beloved toy lines was the Incredible Crash Dummies.

Tyco used in-production prototypes in their images as these catalogs were prepared before the lines were released. This meant that the featured toys often differed from the retail releases. Moreover, toys sometimes appeared only on these catalog pages, as they were canceled or never hit retail store shelves.

While Tyco only handed these booklets to trade professionals, we have now made them available to all. You can explore the toys featured in these catalogs with our Tyco Toy Fair Catalog Scans. This is a rare treat since catalogs like these have become increasingly difficult to locate with each passing year.
