1988 Tyco Toy Fair Catalog – Page 86 – Ghostbusters

Wheeljack’s Lab invites you to explore the 1988 Tyco Toy Fair Catalog. Since catalogs like this were originally distributed at trade shows, the general public rarely saw them. Thus, few received the chance to view these promotional images of the company’s toys, such as the prehistoric Dino-Riders.

The 1988 Tyco Toy Fair Catalog provided information about the Filmation Ghostbusters action figures and more. Emerging around the same time as the movie series, Filmation introduced its Ghostbusters cartoon series in 1986, which revived the characters and concepts from their earlier 1975 live-action series. While Schaper Toys was initially enlisted to create the toys for the Filmation cartoon series, Tyco took over production after acquiring the company.

This 1988 Tyco Toy Fair Catalog page described how the Ghostbusters adventure centered around 2 humans: Jake Kong, Eddie Spenser, and a gorilla named Tracy. Their job was tracking ghosts, spirits, and spooks with the help of their allies. It also provided short profiles of several Ghostbusters characters:

Jessica was a TV reporter and friend who participated in their ghostbusting adventures.

Futura was a sorceress from the 30th century and a Ghostbuster extraordinaire! She was lovely, intelligent, and brave and busted twice as many ghosts as the other Ghostbusters.

Jake Kong was the brave, heroic leader of Ghostbusters. He lived for action and took ghostbusting very seriously.

Tracy was a gorilla with deep affection for his partners. He often communicates with grunts, groans, charades, or props.

Eddie Spenser may not have been the brightest Ghostbusters, but what he lacked in brains, he compensated for in enthusiasm. Where one man would make one mistake, Eddie made five or six.

Belfry was a cross between a bat and a piglet. He lived in the Ghostbusters’ house and accompanied them on their escapades.

Brat-A-Rat was a cross between a bat, a rat, and a stool pigeon. He could fly or spy and was hated by all of Prime Evil’s cohorts.

This page also advertised the Ghostubusters™ Combination Villains (12) and Allies (12), No. 60706. Each assortment contained 24 action figures.

About Our Tyco Toy Fair Catalog Scans

Tyco handed out catalogs to attendees of toy fairs and other events, such as dealers and retailers, to promote their upcoming slate of products. Each catalog contained information about the company’s newest toys, even ones still in development. Thus, companies often included first looks at action figures, playsets, vehicles, etc. Therefore, they have become valuable and rare collector’s items.

These Tyco Toy Fair Catalogs featured toys from their beloved lines. For instance, Tyco introduced the world to a fanciful prehistoric world with the Dino-Riders. They also provided motorized 4×4 fun with the Stompers vehicles. Another of Tyco’s beloved toy lines was the Incredible Crash Dummies.

Tyco used in-production prototypes in their images as these catalogs were prepared before the lines were released. This meant that the featured toys often differed from the retail releases. Moreover, toys sometimes appeared only on these catalog pages, as they were canceled or never hit retail store shelves.

While Tyco only handed these booklets to trade professionals, we have now made them available to all. You can explore the toys featured in these catalogs with our Tyco Toy Fair Catalog Scans. This is a rare treat since catalogs like these have become increasingly difficult to locate with each passing year.
