1984 IDEAL Spring Toy Fair Catalog

1984 IDEAL Spring Toy Fair Catalog

IDEAL prepared to ship its toys to vendors in 1984, so it handed out a Spring Toy Fair Catalog filled with its upcoming products. Even though IDEAL was not the largest toy manufacturer in the 1980s, it created a solid line-up. Moreover, the company recently released one of the hottest toys for players of all ages, the Rubix Cube. So, dealers, retailers, and other vendors looked forward to checking out the 1984 IDEAL Spring Toy Fair Catalog.

While an entire section was dedicated to IDEAL’s Rubix Cube and other puzzles, this catalog offered information about many more toy lines. The company had a selection of various toys and dolls present. There was also information about IDEAL’s Erector Construction System toys. So, there were a few action figures and toy lines of note here.

IDEAL produced one of the most exciting toy lines in 1984, the Manglors. This toy line utilized a special polymer whose properties allowed it to stretch and bend while remembering its original shape. Moreover, the toys were made to have limbs torn off and then reattached. While the toys could not fully live up to the promised playability, they remained a fond part of the 1980s.

Beyond the Manglors, IDEAL also featured action figures based on Living Legends of the Old West. These action figures included popular television characters like Zorro. It also prominently featured one of the most famous heroes of the Wild West, The Lone Ranger.

About Our IDEAL Toy Fair Catalog Scans

IDEAL handed out catalogs to attendees of toy fairs and other events, such as dealers and retailers, to promote their upcoming slate of products. Each catalog contained information about the company’s newest toys, even ones still in development. Thus, companies often included first looks at action figures, playsets, vehicles, and more. Therefore, they have become valuable and rare collector’s items.

These IDEAL Toy Fair Catalogs featured toys from their beloved lines. For instance, the company created the Manglors, creatures built to be stretched and mangled. IDEAL also produced the Robo Force toy line in the 1980s, which featured Maxx Steele. There were also the Living Legends of the Old West, a line featuring characters like The Lone Ranger.

IDEAL used in-production prototypes in their images as these catalogs were prepared before the lines were released. This meant that the featured toys often differed from the retail releases. Moreover, toys sometimes appeared only in these catalog pages, as they were canceled or never hit retail store shelves.

While IDEAL only handed these booklets out to trade professionals, we have now made them available to all. You can explore the toys featured in these catalogs with our IDEAL Toy Fair Catalog Scans. This is a rare treat since catalogs like these have become increasingly difficult to locate with each passing year.
