We invite you to explore the 1984 IDEAL Toy Fair Catalog pages with our high-definition scans. These catalogs were only available to dealers, retailers, and vendors in the past, so few collectors browsed them. However, we have made them available to all with our scans. Thus, anyone may now enjoy the first looks, promotional images, and prototypes in catalogs like this one.
The 1984 IDEAL Toy Fair Catalog featured many exciting toy lines, like the unique Manglors action figures created to be mangled. IDEAL advertised these toys as out-of-this-world creatures made with exotic materials that gave them their properties. Using a special polymer that could bond back together and return to its original shape, they designed these toys to be ripped apart, put back together, and stretched. Thus, players were encouraged to tear off limbs and reattach them to create unique play experiences.

This 1984 IDEAL Toy Fair Catalog page promoted Item No. 49734, the Manglors Mountain Volcanic Lava Pit Fortress Playset. Manglord, the master of Manglor Mountain, was a 7” Sticky-icky creature. Meanwhile, Manglor Mountain was styled from the depths of Earth to resemble a crystal-like cauldron atop a rocky mountain fortress. It was also filled with “Mang-Lava,” an icky ooze from the inner earth.
When players pressed down on the Gargoyle’s tongue, the “Mang-Lava” bubbled up and gurgled up the “Iron Maiden” cage in which Manglord was imprisoned. Thus, Manglord rose through the disgusting “Lava” out of his environment and into the player’s. This playset came with a Manglord figure and a bag of non-toxic, water-based “Mang-Lava.”

About Our IDEAL Toy Fair Catalog Scans
IDEAL handed out catalogs to attendees of toy fairs and other events, such as dealers and retailers, to promote their upcoming slate of products. Each catalog contained information about the company’s newest toys, even ones still in development. Thus, companies often included first looks at action figures, playsets, vehicles, and more. Therefore, they have become valuable and rare collector’s items.
These IDEAL Toy Fair Catalogs featured toys from their beloved lines. For instance, the company created the Manglors, creatures built to be stretched and mangled. IDEAL also produced the Robo Force toy line in the 1980s, which featured Maxx Steele. There were also the Living Legends of the Old West, a line featuring characters like The Lone Ranger.
IDEAL used in-production prototypes in their images as these catalogs were prepared before the lines were released. This meant that the featured toys often differed from the retail releases. Moreover, toys sometimes appeared only in these catalog pages, as they were canceled or never hit retail store shelves.
While IDEAL only handed these booklets out to trade professionals, we have now made them available to all. You can explore the toys featured in these catalogs with our IDEAL Toy Fair Catalog Scans. This is a rare treat since catalogs like these have become increasingly difficult to locate with each passing year.
