1996 Hasbro Toy Fair Catalog – 25 – Gargoyles

We invite you to explore the pages of the 1996 Hasbro Toy Fair Catalog with our high-definition scans. This catalog was handed out to retailers and other vendors. It helped the company promote its new toy selection and sign up vendors to sell their toys. It also gave some exclusive first looks at its upcoming toys from the year.

The 1996 Hasbro Toy Fair Catalog included multiple pages dedicated to Disney’s Gargoyles cartoon series, a part of the Disney Afternoon. These guardians of the night turned into stone statues during the day; thus, they blended in with gargoyle decorations on buildings worldwide. Their adventures began airing on the Disney Afternoon programming block in 1994. Still, the show remained popular enough for Hasbro to continue producing action figures in 1996.

On this 1996 Toy Fair Catalog page, Hasbro detailed information on the 65580 Gargoyles Vehicle Assortment. For instance, the Lightning Assault was two vehicles in one for land and air pursuit. It featured a spring-loaded launch pad that positioned the jet for action. It also had room for three Gargoyles figures. The other vehicle was the On-Line Attack vehicle, which booted up for cyberspace battles on land or in the air. It had room for one Gargoyle figure.

Then, there was the 65600 Gargoyles Hard-Wired Assortment. The Gargoyles team entered cyberspace, becoming computer-styled figures with high-tech features and weapons. Goliath, Broadway, and Lexington had holographic action wings and built-in battle features. Meanwhile, the cyborg, Coldstone, could change from good to evil.

About Our Hasbro Toy Fair Catalog Scans

To promote their upcoming slate of products, Hasbro handed out catalogs to attendees of toy fairs and other events. Each catalog was filled with information about their newest toys, even ones still in development. Thus, they often provided the first looks at action figures, playsets, vehicles, and more from their lines. Therefore, they have become valuable and rare collector’s items.

These Hasbro Toy Fair Catalogs featured toys from their beloved lines. For instance, the company was responsible for one of the most popular action figures of all time: G.I. Joe. They also partnered with Takara to bring the Transformers to the Western market. The company also dipped into the fantastical worlds of Air Raiders, Inhumanoids, and Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light. After Hasbro acquired Kenner, they also became the home of toy lines like Jurassic Park and Star Wars.

Hasbro used in-production prototypes in their images, as these catalogs were prepared before the lines were released. This meant that the featured toys often differed from the retail releases. Moreover, toys sometimes appeared only on these catalog pages, as they were canceled or never hit retail store shelves.

While Hasbro only handed these booklets out to trade professionals, we have now made them available to all. You can explore the toys featured in these catalogs with our Hasbro Toy Fair Catalog Scans. This is a rare treat since catalogs like these have become increasingly difficult to locate with each passing year.
