As Coleco toured the Toy Fairs in 1986, they aimed to promote their hot new license, Rambo. After the movie became a smash blockbuster in 1985, audiences thirsted for more of the rugged soldier. Even though Rambo originated from an R-rated movie, Coleco had faith that the property would sell well in the toy aisle.
Adding to the appeal, Rambo was scheduled to appear in a TV mini-series and full cartoon series in 1986. So, children would be able to enjoy the adventures of Rambo and the Force of Freedom as they fought against the evil S.A.V.A.G.E. With the cartoon’s help, Coleco expected the toys to become the next hot toy line.
So, they dedicated an entire Catalog to their upcoming Rambo toy line. Beyond featuring the title character, these toys introduced toy buyers to the Force of Freedom and S.A.V.A.G.E. from the upcoming cartoon. Moreover, this toy line featured weapons and vehicles from the cartoon and movie.

About Our Coleco Toy Fair Catalog Scans
To promote their upcoming slate of products, Coleco handed out catalogs to toy fair and other event attendees like dealers and retailers. Each catalog was filled with information about their newest toys, even ones still in development. Thus, they were often provided the first looks at action figures, playsets, vehicles, and more from their lines. Thus, they have become valuable and rare collector’s items.
These Coleco Toy Fair Catalogs featured toys from their beloved lines. For instance, the Sectaurs, who combined insects with superheroes, appeared in multiple catalogs. Likewise, Coleco produced and promoted the Rambo toy line, which focused on the cartoon series. There were also many vehicles and toys from the Starcom toy line.
Coleco used in-production prototypes in their images as these catalogs were prepared before the lines were released. This meant that the featured toys often differed from the retail releases. Moreover, toys sometimes appeared only in these catalog pages, as they were canceled or never hit retail store shelves.
While Coleco only handed these booklets out to trade professionals, we have now made them available to all. You can explore the toys featured in these catalogs with our Coleco Toy Fair Catalog Scans. This is a rare treat since catalogs like these have become increasingly difficult to locate with each passing year.
