As the Gundam craze began in Japan with 1979’s Mobile Suit Gundam, the craze for their Gunpla kits, also took off. Originally, Clover created the first series of Gundam toy kits, though their line floundered. After Bandai obtained the rights, they reimagined Clover’s designs as fully assembled action figures that targeted children. Meanwhile, they created a new series of Gundam toys that took notes from military vehicle models for older audiences.
Since then, Gundam models continued to evolve and gain popularity. The craze finally spread to North America in the 1990s. Gundam model kits are sold to this very day.
