In 1972, one of the largest anime series aired on Japanese television, Gatchaman. Sandy Frank Entertainment later decided to take a chance and bring the series to America as the Battle of the Planets, which began airing in 1978. Despite the lack of merchandise in America, several companies created toys in Europe, including Ceves, Ceji Arbois, and Popy.
The fan base for this series remained strong enough that Diamond Select created a toy line in 2002. Series one figures are Mark, Princess, and Keyop. Series two included Jason, Tiny, and Zoltar. There were also a couple of exclusives.
