Clash of the Titans Charon Devils Boatman (1980)

The 1980 Mattel Clash of the Titans Charon action figure, officially named “Charon: The Devil’s Boatman,” is one of the most unusual figures in the original Mattel toy line. Despite Charon’s brief appearance in the film as the skeletal ferryman who carries Perseus across the River Styx, Mattel produced a dedicated figure with a distinctive robe-covered design.

Charon’s lower body is molded as a single hollow cloak, giving the figure a stable, statue-like appearance but limiting its articulation. The figure has only three points of articulation—both arms and a swivel waist—while the head remains fixed. Dark gray plastic represents his tattered robes, with bone-white paint details highlighting his skeletal face and hands.

One of the figure’s most notable oddities is its incorrect accessory. Although Charon uses a long wooden pole to steer his boat in the film, Mattel gave him the same gold-colored Greek short sword included with other figures. Today, the vintage 1980 Mattel Charon figure is collectible for its unusual skeletal sculpt, limited articulation, distinctive cloak body, and amusing mismatch between the character and his weapon.
