Shogun Warriors Goldorak (1978)

Shogun Warriors Goldorak (Grendizer / Grandizer / Goldrake) is one of the rarest and most valuable figures in the vintage Mattel Shogun Warriors line, especially among collectors outside Japan. Never officially released in the United States, Goldorak was primarily distributed in European markets, including France and Italy, and is highly sought after due to its limited availability, colorful design, and connection to the iconic UFO Robot Grendizer anime series.

The figure features a launching missile fist, a large double-ended scythe weapon called Hakken (Harken), shoulder storage for the weapon pieces, and a design closely matching the original Japanese robot. Multiple versions were released between Japan and Europe, with significant differences in accessories, construction, markings, and packaging.

Shogun Warriors Goldorak Release Variations

Version 1 – Japanese Popy UFO Grendizer (Original Release):

• Produced by Popy before the Mattel releases.
• Includes two standard fists rather than the Mazinga-style three-missile firing fist.
• Right fist launches using a shoulder button mechanism.
• Features separate red plastic chest "V," knee pads, and waist armor pieces.
• Painted yellow crotch arrows and red foot spike decals.
• Includes 14 triangular-fin missiles and detailed two-piece white Hakken shoulder scythes.
• Extremely rare outside Japan; some examples reached U.S. collectors through specialty import channels.

Version 2 – Mattel Italy Goldorak / Goldrake (European Release, circa 1978):

• Released in France as Goldorak and Italy as Goldrake with different box artwork but the same figure.
• Manufactured by Mattel Italy with multilingual packaging.
• Replaces several Popy details with cost-reduced parts:
  • Chest "V" and knee pads become decals instead of separate plastic pieces.
  • Molded yellow waist arrows become decals.
  • Neck design is simplified.
  • Hakken scythes become single-piece rigid plastic parts.
  • Feet and leg missile areas are simplified.
  • Left fist changes to a three-missile firing fist.
• One of the most commonly encountered Goldorak releases, though still highly collectible.

Version 3 – Mattel Germany Release (1979):

• Produced in Germany and approximately 1 cm taller than the Italian version.
• Marked "Made in Allemagne" on the back.
• Retains most features of the European Mattel design.
• Considered a scarce regional variation.

Version 4 – La Vache Qui Rit Promotional Release (1980):

• Extremely limited promotional version produced for a La Vache Qui Rit contest.
• Limited to approximately 500 pieces.
• Features special chest labeling and may include a numbered certificate.
• Retains Japanese-style copyright markings on the back.
• Uses packaging based on the Italian Mattel version with French compliance markings.

Version 5 – Mattel France Release (1982):

• Later French production version with "Made in France" embossed on the back.
• Shorter figure height at approximately 58 cm compared with earlier 60–61 cm versions.
• Uses redesigned end-opening packaging rather than the earlier clam-shell style box.
• Considered one of the rarer later Goldorak variants.

With its limited European distribution, multiple production variations, unique Hakken weapon, and ties to UFO Robot Grendizer, Goldorak remains one of the most desirable Shogun Warriors and Jumbo Machinder-style collectibles.
