Shogun Warriors Godzilla is one of the most iconic figures in the Mattel Shogun Warriors lineup and remains the most recognizable release for many American collectors due to Godzilla's long history in U.S. cinema. While collectors sometimes debate whether it qualifies as a true Jumbo Machinder, this 19½-inch figure is widely regarded as one of the most sought-after vintage Shogun Warriors collectibles.

Unlike most Shogun Warriors figures, which stood approximately 23 inches tall, Godzilla measures 19½ inches and includes fewer accessories. However, it features several unique play features, including a launching fist projectile, a rear lever that activates a retractable flame-effect tongue, poseable arms and legs, and wheeled yellow claw feet for rolling play.

Mattel Shogun Warriors Godzilla Production Variations

Mattel released several distinct production versions of Shogun Warriors Godzilla during its original run. While all share the same basic design, each version includes noticeable manufacturing and cosmetic differences that help collectors identify specific releases.

First U.S. Release

The earliest version features brighter green plastic, vivid face paint, weighted legs, yellow claw feet marked "Japan," and a darker red flame lever. It also has visible screw-cover plugs on the head, a tail alignment tab, and may be found with either a finned or smooth tail. Because of these early production characteristics, this version is generally considered the most desirable among collectors.

Second U.S. Release

The second production version uses darker green plastic, more subdued face paint, unweighted legs, and yellow claw feet marked "USA" instead of "Japan." Manufacturing changes eliminated the visible screw-cover plugs, replacing them with a glued stem-and-slot construction. The flame lever was also changed to a brighter red plastic.

Third U.S. Release

The third U.S. release is nearly identical to the second version but includes a reinforced flame lever designed to reduce breakage after durability issues were identified with earlier production runs.

Japanese Popy Jumbosaurus Godzilla

The Japanese version, released by Popy as Jumbosaurus Godzilla, differs significantly from the Mattel release. Instead of the retractable flame tongue mechanism, it features a chest-mounted speaker activated by a pull string that produces a roaring sound effect. These differences make the Japanese release a distinct collectible rather than simply an international version of the Mattel figure.

Shogun Warriors Godzilla Box Variations

Several packaging variations are known for Shogun Warriors Godzilla, including early U.S. boxes, Canadian bilingual packaging, later boxes that corrected the advertised height from 20 inches to 19½ inches, and the scarce "Bloody Claw" box featuring heavier red coloration and enhanced claw artwork. These box variations are especially desirable to collectors of sealed vintage toys.
