Shogun Warriors Mazinga (1977)

Shogun Warriors Mazinga (Mazinger Z) was one of the original three Mattel Shogun Warriors figures released in the United States in 1977, alongside Raideen and Dragun. Based on the famous Japanese super robot, Mazinga features a removable Jet Condor pilot craft in early releases, reflecting the anime design where the robot is controlled by a pilot docking into the head. Later versions were renamed Great Mazinga and featured a permanently attached head aircraft.

The 24-inch-class Shogun Warriors Mazinga included a launching rocket fist, two swords, shoulder and leg missile racks, and originally came with 14 missiles before later releases were reduced to 10 rockets. Due to multiple production changes, collectors identify several distinct Mattel U.S. versions.

Mattel Shogun Warriors Mazinga Release Variations

First U.S. Release (1977 Mazinga):

• Most recognizable by its sharply detailed head sculpt with an arrow-shaped opening for the removable plane.
• Navy blue right winged fist and a four-screw firing fist mechanism.
• Separate pointed red chest "V" emblem with stepped construction.
• Fixed wheel trucks molded into the feet and molded shoulder missile racks.
• Includes 14 rockets with full triangular fins and two swords.
• Considered the most desirable early Mattel version among collectors.

Second U.S. Release (1977 Mazinga):

• Updated head sculpt with rounded edges and a triangular plane opening.
• Lighter blue winged fist and redesigned three-screw rocket launcher mechanism.
• Larger, thicker red chest "V" emblem.
• Separate wheel trucks and removable shoulder missile racks attached with screws.
• Usually includes clipped-fin missiles, although some variations exist with full-fin rockets.
• Includes 14 missiles.

Later Great Mazinga Release:

• Renamed from Mazinga to Great Mazinga on packaging.
• Replaced the removable Jet Condor with a fixed head aircraft.
• Represents the later production style of the figure.

Japanese Popy Great Mazinger Version

Before Mattel's U.S. release, the figure was produced in Japan by Popy as Great Mazinger. The Japanese version shares many design features with the Mattel release but has differences including a darker navy-blue color, a winged left fist, and variations in head sculpt. A rare early Popy version features taller head points and additional wing details.

With its multiple production variations, missile configurations, removable pilot craft, and connection to Mazinger Z, Great Mazinger, and vintage Jumbo Machinder toys, Shogun Warriors Mazinga remains one of the most collectible figures from Mattel's 1970s giant robot lineup.
