Blackstar Tongo with Alien Demon (1984)

The 1984 Galoob Blackstar Tongo the Leopard Man is the upgraded Series 2 version of one of the toy line's signature villains. While Tongo's overall character sculpt remained similar to the 1983 release, Galoob redesigned the figure with its new “Laser Light” sparking action feature, giving the 1984 Tongo a distinctly different play mechanic. A flint wheel built into the figure's back produces visible sparks that can be seen through a clear insert in his chest when the mechanism is activated.

The 1984 Blackstar Tongo Laser Light figure retained his recognizable glow-in-the-dark shield and weapons, although the accessories and figure mold were adapted for the new internal mechanism. Tongo was also packaged with an Alien Demon companion, with regional production variations making blue and red demons possible among the less-common Series 2 combinations.

The packaging is another key identifier of the 1984 Series 2 Tongo the Leopard Man. Unlike the original 1983 Series 1 card, the updated packaging prominently advertises the Laser Light action feature, using lightning-bolt graphics and instructions demonstrating the sparking gimmick. For collectors, the 1984 Tongo is an important Blackstar variation because it combines the classic Leopard Man sculpt with Galoob's more advanced action-feature design intended to compete in the highly competitive 1980s action-figure market.
