Blackstar Palace Guard with Alien Demon (1984)

The Palace Guard, often called the “Bird Man” by collectors, returned in 1984 as part of Galoob’s Blackstar Series 2 Laser Light collection. Serving as one of Overlord’s military forces, the figure retains its distinctive avian humanoid design while receiving a major mechanical upgrade. The most recognizable change is the addition of a large flint-and-striker wheel on his upper back, which produces real sparks inside the figure when activated.

To display the sparks, Galoob replaced the original solid blue chest armor with a translucent clear-orange chest window. The 1984 Palace Guard also received upgraded plastic-and-peg hip joints, replacing the aging rubber-band construction used on the 1983 figure and making the Laser Light version less prone to loose or detached legs. However, the bulky sparking mechanism meant that the original removable technology backpack and flexible tubing were eliminated, leaving the figure primarily equipped with its translucent glow-in-the-dark blaster pistol.

The 1984 Palace Guard Laser Light was still associated with the evil faction’s red Alien Demon companion, a small unarticulated PVC creature packaged alongside the figure. With its avian “Bird Man” design, translucent orange sparking chest, rear flint wheel, upgraded articulation, and simplified accessories, this version is a distinctive evolution of the original Galoob Blackstar Palace Guard and an important variation for vintage Blackstar collectors.
