Blackstar Kadray with Alien Demon (1984)

Kadray the Wizard King was reissued by Galoob in 1984 as part of the Blackstar Series 2 Laser Light collection, transforming the character from the traditional 1983 action figure into a mechanical gimmick toy. The defining feature is a built-in sparking mechanism, activated by a serrated metal flint wheel mounted on Kadray’s back. Rolling the wheel creates sparks that appear inside a translucent chest window, giving the figure a magical energy or laser-blast effect.

The Laser Light gimmick required significant changes to Kadray’s original design. The 1984 figure has a bulkier torso with visible seams surrounding the internal mechanism, while the original white fabric cape was removed to keep the rear flint wheel accessible. Some molded armor details were also simplified. Kadray retained his distinctive translucent glow-in-the-dark trident and forearm shield, while the packaging was redesigned around the bright “LASER LIGHTS!” branding and artwork showing Kadray firing energy from his chest.

Another major difference is that the 1984 Laser Light Kadray was sold without the Alien Demon companion included with the original Series 1 release. For collectors, the working spark mechanism is an important feature, but surviving examples can suffer from worn or oxidized internal flints and damage around the rear wheel caused by excessive force during play. The 1984 Galoob Blackstar Kadray Laser Light is therefore an especially distinctive variation, combining the character’s original fantasy design with one of the toy line’s signature mechanical gimmicks.
