Blackstar Klone Cloud Cat (1984)

Klone, also known as Cloud Cat, is one of the most unusual and mechanically distinctive figures in Galoob’s 1980s Blackstar toy line. Released as the shape-shifting alien ally of John Blackstar, Klone stands approximately 5.5–6 inches tall and uses a unique part-swapping transformation rather than traditional hinges or internal mechanisms. In humanoid form, Klone has an elf-like appearance with pointed ears, a blue-and-yellow outfit, and standard legs.

To transform Klone into his Cloud Cat form, the humanoid head, arms, and legs are removed and replaced with a feline head and four specialized quadrupedal limbs. This innovative design made Klone one of the most distinctive Blackstar toys, but repeated swapping placed considerable stress on the figure’s plastic sockets and connection points. Vintage examples commonly suffer from cracked tabs, stress marks, loose joints, or broken attachment points, while incomplete figures may be missing individual cat limbs or humanoid parts.

A later Laser Light version of Klone added Galoob’s signature mechanical sparking gimmick, with a rear flint-and-striker wheel producing sparks inside a translucent orange chest chamber. Collectors seeking a complete Galoob Blackstar Klone Cloud Cat should pay particular attention to the condition and completeness of the interchangeable parts, since finding an intact figure with both humanoid and Cloud Cat components can be challenging. Klone remains one of the most memorable and unusual figures from the vintage Blackstar toy line.
