Blackstar Kadray with Alien Demon (1983)

Kadray the Wizard King is one of the original figures from Galoob’s 1983 Series 1 Blackstar toy line. This first-edition Kadray is notable for its classic, non-gimmick design before the mechanical features introduced with the 1984 releases. Standing approximately 5.5 inches tall, the figure has basic five-point articulation, a muscular build, and a distinctive purple-and-white color scheme with gold armor accents. His stern head sculpt features the character’s signature white mustache and pointed beard, reflecting his Filmation animated appearance.

The 1983 Kadray figure includes several removable accessories that are highly desirable when completing a vintage example. These include a soft golden-orange helmet, a removable white fabric cape, and matching translucent glow-in-the-dark trident and shield. Kadray was also packaged with an Alien Demon companion, a small unarticulated PVC monster with bat-like wings and fangs. Galoob randomly mixed companion colors, so Kadray releases can be found with green, pink, blue, or yellow Alien Demons.

The original 1983 Galoob Blackstar Kadray packaging features dramatic Filmation-style artwork against a cosmic grid background, with the cardback showcasing the first wave of Blackstar characters and Kadray’s flying beast, Triton. Because the cape, helmet, weapons, and Alien Demon were all separate pieces, complete loose Kadray figures can be difficult to assemble today. For collectors, the 1983 Kadray remains an important Blackstar Series 1 figure and an example of the original pre–Laser Light toy designs.
