Blackstar Blackstar with Trobbit (1983)

The 1983 Galoob Blackstar and Trobbit figure packs introduced the core heroes of the Blackstar toy line as 5.5-inch fantasy action figures packaged with a smaller 2-inch Trobbit sidekick. Each carded set included a main character such as John Blackstar, Klone, Tongo, or Vizir, a randomly selected Trobbit, and a glow-in-the-dark weapon. The random Trobbit assortment added a collectible “mystery” element, encouraging children to purchase multiple copies of the same hero to find different companions.

The 1983 John Blackstar was the original debut version and featured a solid, conventional plastic body with a smooth chest and no internal mechanical gimmick. He came with his signature glow-in-the-dark Star Sword and one randomly assigned Trobbit, such as Balkar, Carpo, Rif, or Poulo. This first-release figure is especially important to collectors because it represents the original Galoob Blackstar sculpt before later mechanical changes were introduced.

The 1984 Galoob Blackstar figure retained the basic appearance of the 1983 release but received a significant engineering update: an internal flint-striking mechanism was added to the chest, creating a mechanical action feature absent from the first version. The change makes the 1984 figure distinguishable from the original despite their similar sculpt and accessories. Today, collectors often seek both versions, with the 1983 solid-chest Blackstar representing the debut release and the 1984 flint-action Blackstar representing the updated version of Galoob’s popular hero and Trobbit figure pack.
