The Colonial Viper is one of the most iconic vehicles from the 1978–1979 Mattel Battlestar Galactica toy line. Based on the legendary fighter spacecraft from the original television series, the Colonial Viper toy includes a removable Colonial Pilot, adjustable wings, an opening cockpit hatch, and missile accessories. Designed for space combat against the Cylons, the Viper became one of the most recognizable ships from the franchise.
Two versions of the toy were released: a firing version with functional red missile launchers and a later non-firing version with missiles permanently attached due to updated toy safety standards. While some collectors note similarities between the Colonial Viper and the Star Wars X-Wing Fighter, the Viper remains a unique and highly collectible spacecraft in its own right. Both versions are considered moderately difficult to find, with the firing version being the more challenging release for Battlestar Galactica collectors and vintage science fiction toy enthusiasts.
