Soundwave is a 1984 Transformers G1 Decepticon that transforms into a realistic blue-and-silver microcassette recorder with an opening cassette door for Mini-Cassette figures. The G1 Soundwave toy was packaged with Buzzsaw and includes a shoulder-mounted cannon, concussion blaster, rocket launcher, and three rockets, with his weapons converting into battery-shaped accessories for storage in recorder mode.
The Transformers G1 Soundwave has several notable production variants, including a 1985 rubsign, revised wrist and pelvis molding, and a relocated cassette-door hinge that became standard on later uses of the mold. Takara's Japanese release included Rumble, non-functioning headphones and microphone, a clear cassette case, and a stronger spring-loaded rocket launcher. Soundwave remained in production through 1986, with Mini-Cassette partners continuing through 1988, making him a key vintage G1 Transformers collectible.
