Mirage is a classic 1984 Transformers G1 Autobot Car that transforms into a Ligier JS11 Formula 1 race car. Originally developed for the Diaclone Car Robot line, the Mirage toy was part of the original 1984 Autobot Cars assortment and features a spring-loaded missile launcher, three missiles, and a rocket-dart hunting rifle. Its vehicle mode was designed to interact with the Optimus Prime/Battle Convoy trailer launcher. Hasbro weakened the missile-launching mechanism for safety, while Takara's version retained the fully functional launcher. Mirage also received a heat-activated rubsign in later releases.
The Transformers G1 Mirage toy is particularly notable to collectors because of its fragile waist construction and the apparent loss or damage of its original mold. After its final mail-away release in 1988, the vintage Mirage mold was never officially reissued, making the original 1984 figure one of the rare G1 toys without an official reissue. Mirage was also one of the most commonly packed Autobot Cars in 1984, appearing twice in many cases. Today, the original G1 Mirage is sought after by collectors for its classic Formula 1 vehicle design, Diaclone origins, and unusual release history.
