Metroplex is a classic 1986 Transformers G1 Autobot City toy and one of the largest and most interactive releases from the original toyline. Designed by Kōjin Ōno for Takara, Metroplex transforms from a massive robot into a multi-level city featuring a service bay, helipad, vehicle parking, and a third mobile battle-station mode. The toy includes three smaller companions—Scamper, Slammer, and Six-Gun—along with an extensive arsenal of interchangeable weapons. Universal weapon pegs allow Metroplex's accessories to be repositioned across multiple configurations, while compatible Transformers can interact with his robot and city modes, making Metroplex a centerpiece for G1 playsets and the Japanese Scramble City concept.
Metroplex is also notable for its connection to the canceled Diaclone Jizai Gattai concept and its compatibility with combiners including the Aerialbots, Stunticons, Protectobots, and Combaticons. Later production versions changed from rubber to hard-plastic tires and received structural reinforcement around the waist, addressing a well-known breakage issue. Collectors should be aware that several components—including the waist, chest launcher, back peg, shoulder antenna, and Scamper's joints and arm pegs—are particularly fragile. The original Metroplex mold was later redecoed and lightly retooled into Metrotitan, further establishing its importance in Transformers G1 toy history.
