Spiral Zone Zone Rider Armored Combat Cycle (1987)

The 1987 Tonka Zone Rider Armored Combat Cycle, commonly known as the Zone Cycle, was the primary assault vehicle for the heroic Zone Riders in the Spiral Zone toy line. Designed for the line’s large 7-inch action figures, the Zone Cycle is one of the collection’s most distinctive vehicles.

Rather than using a conventional motorcycle design, the Zone Cycle features a futuristic single-wheel monowheel configuration. The rider sits inside the giant blue wheel while the inner cockpit remains stable as the outer tread rolls across the floor. A built-in mechanical gear system activates the vehicle’s top-mounted laser cannon, causing it to pivot back and forth as the cycle moves.

The Zone Cycle is notoriously difficult to find complete because several small components were easily lost or broken during play. Important parts include the snap-on foot pegs, smoked translucent windshield, and rear stabilizer/kickstand. Collectors should also check that the rolling mechanism and cannon action still function properly.

A complete 1987 Tonka Zone Cycle with its windshield, foot pegs, stabilizer, and working mechanical action is a desirable addition to a vintage Spiral Zone collection.
