The 1984 LJN Dune Spice Scout is a large, highly collectible vehicle designed for LJN’s 6-inch Dune action figures. Its unusual tricycle-style design features two front wheels and one massive, deeply treaded rear wheel built for the sands of Arrakis. Mechanical features include a pop-open weapon compartment with hidden laser cannons, a rotating amber cockpit canopy, working steering, and a cockpit sized for figures such as Paul Atreides or Feyd-Rautha.
Originally sold in a large illustrated box, the Spice Scout required simple assembly and included decals and instructions. Collectors should distinguish it from LJN’s smaller Sand Scout/Rough Riders vehicles, as the Spice Scout is the larger flagship vehicle intended for the main Dune action-figure line.
The LJN Spice Scout is especially notable because it was based on early production concepts but was almost entirely absent from the finished 1984 Dune film, appearing only briefly as background scenery. Today, its large size, unusual design, play features, and limited screen presence make the vintage 1984 LJN Dune Spice Scout an important and unusual collectible from the original Dune toy line.
