Dune Sand Roller (1984)

The 1984 LJN Dune Rough Riders Motorized Sand Roller is a compact, battery-powered vehicle from LJN’s original Dune toy line. Like the Sand Crawler, it used LJN’s popular Rough Riders technology, featuring a small motor powered by a single AA battery for off-road action across sand and obstacles.

Unlike the tracked Sand Crawler, the Sand Roller has an open-cockpit dune-buggy design molded in tan and brown plastic. It features four oversized, deeply treaded rubber tires, a large front push-bar grille, and a rear engine block with dual chrome exhaust pipes. Its design combines Dune’s futuristic desert setting with styling inspired by 1980s sand-rail buggies and Baja racing vehicles.

The Sand Roller was sold individually alongside the Sand Crawler and Sand Tracker as part of LJN’s motorized Dune Rough Riders vehicles.

For collectors, the biggest issue is the condition of the rubber tires. After four decades, the oversized tires can dry-rot, crack, harden, or chemically deteriorate, making examples with soft, intact original tires particularly desirable.
