Dune Sand Tracker (1984)

The 1984 LJN Dune Rough Riders Motorized Sand Tracker completes LJN’s trio of battery-powered Dune desert vehicles, alongside the Sand Crawler and Sand Roller. Designed to capitalize on the 1980s micro-4x4 craze, the Sand Tracker was a small motorized vehicle built to crawl over dirt, sand, and other obstacles.

The Sand Tracker has a fully enclosed, armored scout-truck design molded in light tan plastic to match the deserts of Arrakis. A large twin-barrel laser cannon is mounted on the roof, giving the vehicle a distinctive sci-fi reconnaissance appearance.

Powered by a single AA battery, the toy features motorized four-wheel-drive action. A toggle switch activates the motor, causing its oversized rubber tires to spin and propel the vehicle across rough surfaces. Within the toy’s fictional Dune setting, Sand Trackers served as reconnaissance vehicles protecting spice operations from enemy attacks.

For collectors, condition is particularly important because these vehicles were designed for outdoor play. Battery leakage and corrosion are common problems, with old batteries potentially damaging the wiring, motor, and battery compartment. Complete examples with working motors and intact tires are especially desirable.
