Dune Sandworm (1984)

The 1984 LJN Dune Sandworm, or Shai-Hulud, is widely regarded as the most iconic and sought-after toy in LJN’s original Dune line. Unlike the standard 5.5-inch action figures, the Sandworm was sold separately as a large deluxe creature designed to tower over the figures and recreate the massive sandworms of Arrakis.

Measuring approximately 14 inches long, the Sandworm features a highly detailed segmented body, painted sand-like markings, and a huge open mouth filled with rows of teeth inspired by the sandworms in David Lynch’s 1984 Dune film.

Its key feature is its poseable, bendable body. Internal articulation allows the worm to twist, curve, and bend, letting children position it as though Shai-Hulud were erupting from the sands of Arrakis.

LJN reportedly considered multiple Sandworm concepts, including a plush version, but the 14-inch bendable hard-plastic version was the one released commercially.

Today, the vintage 1984 LJN Dune Sandworm is highly prized by collectors because of its large size, distinctive design, movie-inspired sculpt, poseable construction, and relative rarity compared with the standard LJN Dune action figures. It is considered the “Holy Grail” of the 1984 LJN Dune toy line.
